reduce size spell

Noctos

First Post
ok i had a game first time question. and i'm not sure how to handle it. so i figure i should ask here.

ever have any one want to cast shrink on a enemy's armor weather it be the plate, boot, glove, belt, ring, helm, exe...
cause i was thinking that might kill a person if you shrank a persons breast plate while they were wearing it all there organs would be crushed andf rips shattered. or if they had a collar on decapitate them. an arm band shrunk could cut the arm off.
should the equipment get reduce size slower giving the opponent a chance you remove article if they roll a saving throw right.

how much damage would a shrinking leather breast plate do to a person be for it ripped. would scale mail break be for killing the person. would a ring crush a figure until it fell off.

just wondering what you guys think. personally i was impressed at the new dangerous use for the spell and see wonderful new ways to torture players.

1. Reduce Size is a spell? I know Reduce Person and Reduce Animal are...
2. You normally can't cast cast spells like that on an enemies armor, since its not in your possession or unoccupied.
3. Generally if there is something interfering with a size increase/decrease, a strength check is made to break the confines/crush whatever is impeding the spell. The armor would not be able to make the strength check, and would simply stop shrinking when it became skin tight.
4. Your spelling and grammar are impeccable.

yeah you know lvl one spell enlarge or the reverse reduce. the target can be a person-animal or object. it doesn't say you have to touch the item or person to effect them with this spell as the range is just close. so you could cast it on another persons armor

The first level spells are Enlarge Person and Reduce Person, at least in D&D 3.*.

There is a 3rd level spell Shrink Item, but the object must be unattended. It's the 3rd Ed version of the old Itemize spell.

the target can be a person-animal or object.

The only 3.5 ed first level enlarge spell that I know of is enlarge person, which specifies the target as "One humanoid creature". Likewise, the first level Reduce Person specifies the target as "one humanoid creature." The second level druid reduce animal spell specifies "one willing animal of Small, Medium, Large, or Huge size".

Which edition or which book are you referencing that the target can be an object? Sounds like a cool one.

Noctos, I know it's a bit late to ask this, but what edition of the game are you playing?

The answer may invalidate a lot of what we've written.

Its probably a home-brew spell in a completely home-brew campaign, considering it's Noctos. He isn't the most familiar with actual printed info... so maybe one of his players described it to him and he just assumed it was printed somewhere. Regardless, a spell for reducing the size of an item will be restricted by all the limitations mentioned unless he decides to home-brew the home-brewed spell...

You should have it work like the amulet of choking in the DMG. If it was a ring you could lose your finger, but thats better than your head

Even though it's not 1st level, Shrink Item does not mention requiring the target to be unattended or describe anything about what would happen if some force would interfere with the spell's magic.

However, since the spell states the magic ends when the object is tossed onto any solid surface I'd say this applies even when the item is still shrinking, so just dropping to the floor, or hitting your shield or possibly even your weapon or hand onto your armor would stop the magic.

I am surprised about the spell though. Without any house ruling this spell effectively allows a level 5 wizard to instantly kill someone with just a touch attack. Something even a level 9 spell probably would not allow.
