Recommend Win98SE DVD burning software to me...

Jeysie

First Post
So, I finally bought a DVD burner for my computer, since 700MB CDs for backup just doesn't work that well for a 120GB hard drive. Good news is, it still installed really easy in Windows 98SE. Bad news is, the bundled burning software only works in XP and up.

So, I need to find some burning software that works in Win98SE. Freeware would be ideal, but reasonably priced shareware is OK too (like, not more than $50). All I'm going to be creating is data discs, so I don't need menu creating or image editing or DVD copying or what have you. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have two suggestions:

1. Get rid of 98.
2. Don't spend money trying to find things that work in 98.

*gives a very irritated sigh*

I'm going to be getting a new computer in a few months, so I see no reason to waste money buying and installing a new OS right now. (Especially since any money spent on that just means it'll be *longer* before I save up enough for a new one.) Plus I want to keep this computer using Win98 for the purposes of playing old games.

Thus, I need a Win98 burning solution *now*, so I can 1. keep my data backed up in case I have a catastrophe before I can afford a new one, and 2. have an easy means of porting my existing data to my eventual new XP/Linux/Vista/whatever computer.

So, anyone have any *helpful* suggestions? :P

Is there any way of getting one disc burned at a friends, school, work or something. If thats an option then you can burn a disc of Ubuntu which is a CD disc installer and is supposed to be able to read the files on the harddrive too. I believe, though as you can tell im not all that sure, that it will configure all of the hardware in the setup for linux and is then able to write files on a DVD burner.

Otherwise I remember from the bad ole days of 98 that the burner of choice was the Easy CD Creator by Adaptec. I have a proper disc here which is copyright 1998. Now whether that did DVDs is anyones guess but mine would be a nay.

Again my knowledge here is scant but I think you need an ATAPI driver for your DVD drive then the ATAPI interface is pretty standard so your chances of burning using it would be that much better. Then any app that will run under 98 should work ok. A quick search turned up this :-

but I have no idea if its any good or works.

Spend your money on an external HDD. No software required and will be 100% compatible with your new PC. You can 250-300 GB drives for under $100.

Redrobes: Well, I was more wondering if anyone had any DVD burning software they already use that they could recommend as being good, so I had a starting point for ones to try out. I don't need any drivers or anything; the drive itself works fine.

Glassjaw: Well, I kind of want to create separate archives of stuff, rather than just one giant backup. *And* it'd be nice to have a way to share stuff with people too, without having to use a ton of CDs. Like a friend with dial-up I could download demos and freeware adventures for and stuff. A lot easier to send a couple DVDs through the mail than a bucket of CDs or an entire hard drive. :P

Plus, I just dropped $60 on a burner (I needed something that plays back DVDs better than my old drive, too, so it's not totally useless)... why should I drop another $60-$100 on an external drive when all I need is some burning software? Surely someone around here must burn data DVDs and can tell me what they use for software... :P

The thing is that Win98 is a nine-year-old operating system, it's hard to write software now that will actually run on 9x (mostly because it's easy to use some library that only works on NT-based Windows), and DVD burners didn't become common until after XP came out. So although you might be able to scare up something that works, finding something that's actively maintained and supported is probably going to be another matter.

Drothgery: I am aware of that; I'm not tech-illiterate. :p Just... eh, I guess people are used to helping people who *are* tech-illiterate, as opposed to people who just would like a specific question answered since they are already aware of the alternatives (and don't find them suitable).

I just figured there's gotta be at least one program that works in 98... and I'm not fussed if it's not being updated since if it works I don't need to update it. :p

In any case...

XCorvis: Thanks much! It looks promsing enough, so I'll try it out this weekend. :)

I am also ready to get a DVD burner, and I searched a lot online. There are two that I like more than others
