Read Lips

Ok, so Read lips has been removed from the skills in the 3.5. but do you guys still use it? I mean...it was a good skill. and my if two characters have it, they can communicate with each other without sound. Do you guys still use this skill? and are there other skills that you think that may have been deleted without reason?

I wouldn't say this one was deleted, it was just made into spot.

Read Lips
To understand what someone is saying by reading lips, you must be within 30 feet of the speaker, be able to see him or her speak, and understand the speaker’s language. (This use of the skill is language-dependent.) The base DC is 15, but it increases for complex speech or an inarticulate speaker. You must maintain a line of sight to the lips being read.

If your Spot check succeeds, you can understand the general content of a minute’s worth of speaking, but you usually still miss certain details. If the check fails by 4 or less, you can’t read the speaker’s lips. If the check fails by 5 or more, you draw some incorrect conclusion about the speech. The check is rolled secretly in this case, so that you don’t know whether you succeeded or missed by 5.

Now... I don't think that makes perfect sense, as just cause you have good eyesight doesn't mean you neccesarily know how to read lips... but meh.

yup i agree. maybe that should just apply to certain classes. like bard and rogue for exemple. or better yet. they should've just left the skill read lips alone, they always pick on the little guy! it was one of my favourite skills lol

Actually, they just helped the little guy out, since he can pick up Spot (which most rogue types normally do) and get the benefits of reading lips to boot, without having to spend skill pts separately for it.

I agree with that. but as Vorp said it, just because you can spot it, it doesn't mean you should know how to read lips, it doesn't make that much sense

but that goes with everything. just becuse im hot, doesent mean magical devices should be easyer to use. :)

spot is wisdom based and wisdom is is almost a type of awareness so... whatever :)

Realism often has to take the backseat to ease of use. Huge lists of very limited skills aren't right for D&D, so they keep the list short. (I shortened the list further in my campaign, getting rid of some more niche skills)

I see comments like that a lot, but it doesn't really apply to the 3.5 revision. 3e didn't have a huge list of skills, it had a teensy-tiny list of skills, so there was no pressing need to make it smaller still IMO. :D

That's a matter of perspective. Many people have complained that 3e had too many skills and many of them should be folded into one.
