D&D 5E Questions about 5e desert travel

I have a group of 8 level 6 PC's and they're about to traverse a vast desert. They're all pretty resourceful and I run a magic heavy world so what are some cool challenges I can throw at them while they're there? Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for in the desert mechanics wise? Also wondering about the best way to point out an oasis that is actually a mirage because I love messing with my players. Any help is appreciated!

Chapter 5 of DMG has rules for extreme heat, quicksand, sandstorms, and becoming lost in the desert.
He did say he ran a magic-heavy campaign, so I would assume the DMG contains only trivialities that are easily overcome, negated or circumvented.

I believe he is asking for uniquely Dungeons & Dragons:ian challenges and encounters that test the mettle, not of any real-world desert travellers, but powerful heroes aided by magic - that is, 5E characters right out of the PHB.

Remember, this edition is extremely generous with abilities that trivialize most any real-world (mundane) challenge. This certainly includes such things as heat, water, navigation.

To challenge 5E heroes built by players who know what they are doing, you need things like magical storms, sphinxes that confound the party, dead-magic zones, and lots of desiccated zombies. [emoji4]
