Can you have a protection from energy Fire spell active at the same time as you have a protection from energy electricity spell on the same subject?

Yes. Heck, you can have a resist energy (fire) spell active at the same time as a protection from energy (fire) is active. I believe the way they work is that the Protection from energy absorbs damage until it runs out and that the resist energy then takes 10-30 (depending upon clvl) points off each fire attack.

Quote from the SRD on resist energy: "Note: Resist energy overlaps (and does not stack with) protection from energy. If a character is warded by protection from energy and resist energy, the protection spell absorbs damage until its power is exhausted."

I would say that since the spells do NOT stack, resist energy only works when the protected creature actually gains damage from the energy source. So when a character protected by both spells got damaged, first apply the spell to protection from energy and once that is run out, the resist energy comes into effect.

You are right though that you can have protections against multiple energy types running at the same time.

Of course, they work separately one for each energy type.

They would overlap only if they gave resistances to the same energy type.
