Which term do you prefer? These CE natives of Tarterus were first introduced as "demodands" in the original MM2 (TSR, 1983), but were later renamed in 2nd Ed. to "Gehreleths" (much like the daemons were renamed to yugoloths).

I never thought much of them until I played the CRPG PLANESCAPE in '99 and ran into hordes of the Farrastu (Tarry) type runniing amok in the (cursed) town of Curst! Deadly, deadly, deadly, even for super high powered characters like I had! So the poll on yugooth or daemon inspired me to ask this even more obscure "old school" question. ;)

So, which term do you prefer, and do you ever use them in your games? With what role and what results?

I prefer the term "Shazalablu~~!"

Nothing like imagining Angcuru pointing at a raging(demodand) and going, "Watch out! It's a fearsome Hairy Shazalablu~~!"

Both.
Gehreleth sounds ominous to me, for some reason, while Demodand sounds decidedly old-school. I like 'em both.

I like 'em both too. I don't like the term Yugoloth for daemons however; it reminds me of those crappy communist cars in the 80s. :D Or, it reminds me of "yucky." I don't object to the suffix "-loth" just the prefix "yugo-"... But "daemons" is confusingly similar to "demons". What's a poor DM to do? :(

Generally, I use both.
Baatezu are included into Devil
Tanar'ri are included into Demon
Therefore a baatezu is a devil while a devil may not be a baatezu.

But for now, I havn't seen any daemon that wasn't also a yugoloth, nor any demodand that wasn't also a gehreleth. Besides, demodands are sort of demons anyway (chaotic evil fiends). More emphasis on evil and less on chaos, but still.

Bah, I use both. Depending on who speaks about them. Themselves, they goes by gehreleth. I don't see them calling themselves "slime" or "tarry", but "farastu", why not.

"Demodand" looks like "deodand", so it brings confusion with Vance's monsters.

DAEMOLOTH! :D

planescape names all the way baby...besides demodand sounds so sissy...like the kids demons would pick on in outerplanar highschool.

I like them both, but damn, daemoloth does sound cool! I think I'll just have to make a whole new class of outsider for my cosmology.
