D&D 5E Poison in 5e

Snoring Rock

I do not see poison types or cost in the PHB. I see nothing about it at all. I would expect to see it there if it was common. So I assume it is covered in the DMG. Is it covered I the DMG? I have the book, but I do not have it with me. I have some time today to try to figure out how to handle it in game, but need more information. How is poison use by assassin-type rogues used/done in 5e?

There is basic poison in the PHB.

Poison, basic (via) - 100gp

Poison, Basic. You can use the poison in this vial to coat one slashing or piercing weapon or up to three pieces of ammunition. Applying the poison takes an action. A creature hit by the poisoned weapon or ammunition must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or take 1d4 poison damage. Once applied, the poison retains potency for 1 minute before drying.

There are more poisons listed the in the DMG.

It is very easy for players to get poison from milking their familiars, animals companions, or harvesting them from killed creatures.

With the 100gp price tag it will keep the amount of store bought poison down.

I used poison, and poisoning in my game, but I keep it expensive or hard to get. Survival checks to harvest it from creatures, Nature or Medicine checks to identify poisons or create them from components. No way any PC is walking into the local equipment shop and buying a vial of poison; it'll necessitate hunting down some beasts or seeking out the kind of shady characters who deal in murder and suchlike.

As to the types of poison available, either I just give the PC's the same poison effects that come from the thing they harvested it from, or I homebrew it. Jungle tribesmen shooting poison darts? That's a DC 14 Con save or be stunned for one minute, CON save on each turn. Shady serpentmen drugging and influencing local rulers? That poison, when ingested or contacted through a wound, gives the victim disadvantage on all WIS and CHA saves.

Ah, thank you. I looked in the index and saw nothing. It did not occur to me to check the equipment list. Thanks!
