D&D 5E PC gold per level

Looking at the magic item thread for A5E lists magic item cost and I was wanting to know the average gold per PC at certain levels. Not sure how others handle gold and if you are higher or lower than 'normal'. I know that I tend to give out more items than the chart recommends, but gold, I think I'm about right.

I was looking at DMDaves site and he has a chart referencing a few other sites and averages them. More simplified below.

4th level PCs tend to have 300-400 gp each
5th- 600
6th- 3,000
8th- 8,500
10th- 12,000
12th- 30,000
14th- 60,000
16th- 90,000

Not sure if this will tie in with the other thread on magic item costs and help that thread with what items may cost.

Do you mean how much gold an average character is supposed to have accumulated in 5e?

Well, by 5th level, characters should have an average of 1,372gp through purely treasure hoards (including cp and sp). Divided evenly, of course, so its actually only 343gp per character, which isn't that far off from the given chart despite being double. That's because they are also supposed to obtain art objects and gems in these hoard tables so they do get a good sum more.
 


I totally ignore any tables or lists, and give out wealth so that it fits the story and/or creates challenges.

In one campaign my players are on some roadtrip, level 6, and dirt poor. They own nothing of value and have nearly no cash, and this means they struggle to do basic things like buying healing potions, ink & paper for the wizard, or improve their armor. It gives an interesting dynamic to the game, and they are happy when they find 50 gc.

In another campaign, I had my players join a big heist at L2, where they found a huge amount of cash and got away with it. The BBEG who hired them conveniently died, and the players ended up with enough cash to buy a stronghold at L2. Totally different dynamic. Now the players have a home base from where they stage smaller adventures as part of a bigger storyline. Also easy for the DM to develop some NPCs in the local neighborhood that keep coming back - eventually you'll find one that you like to play, and that the players like to encounter.
