[OT] Anything to do in Newburgh NY?

Darklance

First Post
Well after teetering back and fourth for some time now, it looks like I'll be moving to Newburgh NY for college. I'm wondering if anyone lives there/has visited there. Anything to do? Any game stores? Any gaming groups? Thanks.

go visit West Point, it's not to far away ...

um, wow, ... I grew up in middletown which is south-westerly ... (84 west iirc), but know little about the surrounding area.

you are within commuting distance of the city though (NYC) and there should be some cheap train fare to be found.

I used to live in Walden, which is a village west of Newburgh off Route 17K. There was a really good gaming/comic store up in New Paltz - "October Country" I think was the name - which we used to frequent. I have no idea if it still exists. But I expect that you won't have much trouble finding gaming materials or fellow gamers if you look. Anyway, Orange County is a great place - If I didn't live in Austin, I would miss it a lot. ;)

Good luck.

I grew up in Pine Bush, which is about 30 minutes west of Newburgh (just past Walden). Haven't lived there for 7 years though. Wow, I had no idea I'd find my NY roots showing up here on ENWorld. :) What school are you going to?

As for things to do, I can second the vote for New Paltz (I went to school there), although I don't think October Country is still in business. I went looking for it on a trip back a year or so ago, and found an empty storefront. I used to drop alot of money there... :(

Between Newburgh, Middletown, and New Paltz, I'm sure there is some kind of game shop that you'll be able to get too. If not, Poughkeepsie isn't that far a drive across the Hudson (there used to be a store there called Iron Vic's and also the Dragon's Den). There is definitely plenty to do in the area, between hiking & rock climbing in the Gunks, boating on the Hudson, and if you're in school you'll be able to find gamers, either where you are or over in New Paltz.

You can easily catch the train to NYC across the river in Beacon as well. I used to commute into NYC for work from there, its about a 1 hr 20 min ride and being a commuter train it runs 1 or 2 times an hour.

Ah, you got me all home sick now...:D

PINE BUSH!!! *wolf tries to do the erin cry for ireland*

*Wolf suffers flashback pains of long bus ride from Scotchtown to PineBush HS*

whoa, whoa, WHOA! :)

sigh, I remember biking to circleville to meet my coach/team ... then running back roads from circleville towards PB ... then biking home! ach! (wolf was never a good runner, but he used to be able to hang for a while)

gods, so you've got to see all the new additions to the HS? (grad 91) ... man it's all different now!

[edit: to keep this on topic ... nevermind, I left the area in '91 and have only been back a few times on leave/holiday/vacation, so I know next to nothing of the area anymore. I survived on B. Dalton and Walden Books for my gaming needs. 'Course that's when the Orange Plaza was a major mall  .]

Dragon's Den is still there. Poughkeepsie is great for shopping... just find Rt 9 and you'll find three malls, Dragon's Den, Media Play, Barnes & Nobles, and a ton of other stuff. Plus, if you go to the train station on Main St., you can take the Metro Rail to NYC.

And the thread goes way off topic... (Sorry about that!)

Ah yes. B.Dalton in the Orange Plaza. I remember running in to buy what ever new hardback book came out when they only cost $15 (And if B.Dalton didn't have it, the overpriced toy store downstairs did). Still remember when I saw the first Dragonlance novel sitting on the display in front of the cashregister the day it came out. Those were the days...

hoo boy!!! I remembe that place ... it was creepy, but then again did have some really neat models ... not that I had money to buy them.

B.Dalton ... lol, my mom and sis would leave me there while they went shopping, I would read through the majority of book/novel

update (info only about 4 years old): Middletown now has the Galleria at Crystal Run (NO idea where they got that fancy name from, especially considering the location) ... last I noticed, no decent book/gaming store.
