Orc weapon proficiencies

I was reading through the orc description in the SRD (don't have the MM at hand), and I noticed this, under Combat sub-heading:
SRD said:
Orcs are proficient with all simple weapons, preferring those that cause the most damage in the least time. Many orcs who take up the warrior or fighter class also gain proficiency with the falchion or the greataxe as a martial weapon.

I'm uncertain what this actually means. Are all orcs immediatelly proficient with all simple weapons? It's the second sentence that's actually confusing, since orcs (or members of any other race, for that matter) that take levels in fighter or warrior classes automatically gain proficiency with falchion and greatax (since both are standard martial weapons).

Confusing. But making all orcs (and one could argue half-orcs as well) proficient with all simple weapons would give a nice, and usable, trait to the race.

As written, all orcs are proficient with simple weapons. The second sentence is just badly phrased, IMO, and refers to orcs with warrior and fighter classes choosing to use the falchion or greataxe.

As shilsen....

Humanoids are proficient with all simple weapons. Warriors are proficient with all martial weapons.

Orc warriors just like to CHOOSE falchions or greataxes as their "favourite" weapons, because they deal the most damage and/or have the highest critical threat range. The two weapons are just examples for introducing orc warriors into the game.

Kind regards

No, I don't think that humanoids are proficient with all simple weapons. That would make no sense in regards to wizards and their proficiencies.

Hi!

Please look it up in the Monster Manual 3.5.

If a humanoid with 1 HD takes a character class it interchanges the default weapon proficiencies for all humanoids with that from his class. If the humanoid has more than 1 HD and takes a character class it retains its former weapon proficiencies and gains the weapon proficiencies from its new class.

Kind regards

The wording is wrong but I get it. It basically means that the typical (NPC) orc warriors and fighters are most likely to favor falchion and greataxe over all other martial weapons.

Right. 1HD humanoids don't get any "humanoid" benefits.
