Anyway, yes, it stands for Big Bad Evil Guy. It first cropped up (to my knowledge) in discussion forums/newsgroups related to "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer." The term refers to the big supervillain who runs the plot each season. After a couple seasons, people began wondering who the BBEG was this year... eventually, it started getting called the 'Big Bad' as well, so you see that pop up too.

The fun part is that Joss Whedon (the guy who created the show) reads said boards, and sometimes incorporates their stuff into the show. For instance, people started referring to the heroes on the show as the 'Scooby Gang' or 'Scoobies'. (If you don't get the reference... SHAME! ). Eventually, the characters in the show started referring to themselves by that name.

I think you have that evolution a little backwards, actually. The Buffy fans got it as a reference to the Big Bad, as in Big Bad Wolf, originally as a phrase used by Spike ("I'm the Big Bad, baby."). That dovetailed with the already existing, but not nearly as widely-used Big-Bad-Evil-Guy, mostly used in reference to CRPGs (alternately known as the "Grand Foozle", mostly to adventure game enthusiasts).

Thanks to the Internet, merging fandom-bases and a popular zeitgeist, they all sort of merged together. However, Buffy/Angel fans still prefer the use of 'Big Bad' versus the gamers, who still prefer "BBEG". A quick google will find references daing back to the early nineties, predating the Buffy movie.

Another recurring character in my campaigns seems to be TOMOTS; The Old Man Of The Scenario. Whether he is a deranged hermit, a wizened philosopher, or a bumbling bad guy, some old geezer always seems to sneak into the game to cause trouble.
