D&D 5E Oil+Alchemist's Fire

If I get this entire interaction right, a level 1 character (assuming they found some way to buy them) with these 2 items can do

Round 1: Throw oil. 1d20+dex attack roll, 1d4+dex damage

Round 2: Throw Alchemist's fire. 1d20+dex attack, 1d4+dex+5(oil)+1d4(monster's turn)

Round 3: Regular attack. If monster is still on fire, automatic 1d4+5 every turn afterwards until they spend an action themselves.

Is this right? I'm fairly confident but I could be missing something...

Does the flask count as an improvised weapon? That d4 suggests that getting hit by a flask does twice as much damaged as getting punched in the face. I might rule a lower damage, but the real key is the oil and fire..

You can also bundle them together and use them with the Catapult spell. I want to try this with an Alchemist.

Keep it simple, I’d just say a 4 means the flask hits you in your eye, or that a sharp fragment causes a scratch

Yeah, it says to treat the oil as an improvised weapon. I can imagine the broken shards would be quite painful, of course at the expense of accuracy unless you have tavern brawler.

It also incentivizes the wizard to firebolt/fireball.

Or just call it 1 damage, like an unarmed attack. I'm not convinced the flask itself is supposed to do damage at all, but a small amount isn't going to rock the boat. I think the d4 for improvised weapons is supposed to be for things like barstools and frying pans.

Hmm, I always read that as being about rolling to hit, but the d4 is part of the rules. Huh. Well, it's not breaking the game either way, so do the fun thing.

It's a nice combo, but alchemist fire is way too expensive. Oil is the real winner here, and you can combine it with firebolts or create bonfire, etc.

If you have a caster with Catapult, using Oil, Alchemist Fire, and Acid are really good options to send. Try to get a line of enemies though, because missing with AF and Acid really sucks, given the cost.

Alot of players complain about the abundance and lack of use for gold. I guess having a few spare alchemist's fire to burn could be useful.

Not if you have an Alchemist in the party. Then it's all fun and games.
