D&D 5E Oathbreaker vs. Paladin

I have recently read something about an Oathbreaker negating a Paladin's Aura of Courage with their Dreadful Aspect.

The specific wording for Dreadful Aspect is "Each creature of the paladin's choice within 30 feet of the paladin must make a Wisdom s aving throw if it can see the paladin. On a failed save, the target is frightened of the paladin for 1 minute."

Paladin's Aura of Courage specifically states "you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can't be frightened while you are conscious".

I'd say this specifically trumps Dreadful Aspect.

Thoughts? I'm anticipating this coming up in the campaign I mention in the Warlocks & Patrons thread, and probably from the same player. I'm guess at some of his hinting around he might be wanting to become an Oathbreaker despite the fact that I keep mentioning it's going to be NPC only, period.

I think you could force the wisdom save, but you couldn't be firghtened. It's like damage and resistance. The full damage is still DEALT, but the HP loss is negated. Non-oathbreaker paladins can still be forced to make wisdom saves, but they can't be subjected to the effects.

It might be simpler to just not roll at all.

But I would say Aura of Courage works against Dreadful Aspect the same way it works against Frightful Presence: you can't be frightened.

I figured out where I've read this, a quote from the weareantipaladin tumblr.

"You are correct. For instance while a paladin heals with a touch I harm. He smites evil, while I smite good. Perhaps that is why he despises my existance, a paladin is normally fearless but that particular gift is removed while in my presence."

Sounds like rules-less tumblr internet toughguyness.

I'd say you're right; "You cannot become frightened" trumps "you become frightened."

I thought that might be the case.

He can want to become an oathbreaker all he wants, but if you've told him "No" then it is no longer on the table. You might allow him to gradually swap his Paladins level for Warlock levels if he decides to break his Oath and lose his Paladin abilities.
