Nocturnals

So has anybody else purchased this?

I'd never read the comics, but I gave it the once-over a few times in the book store. I thought it might be interesting to steal ideas from for my Pulp/Supers game. Eventually my wife told me to get it over with and buy it because she was tired of going to the book store to watch me ghost past it three or four times. (What can I say, I don't make decisions easily! :) )

Anyway, after going through it and getting into it, I realize it is ENTIRELY different from my own game. My game is inspired by Doc Savage pulp novels from the 30s, Gumshoe noir flicks, and chinese Wuxia films (well, one episode, anyway). Nocturnals is more about the B-Horror, Spaghetti Westerns, and Strange Science pulps ... All retro pastiche to be sure, but pulling from different genres.

My wife has read through it and has fallen in love with the whole concept; to the point that she's dressing up like Eve Horror for Halloween ... having never actually read a Nocturnals comic (can't find any of the TPBs in the Cinci/Hamilton area ... had Queen City call around a bit, but no dice).

I'm one of those fellows that can't seem to use a canned product "As Is" off the shelf, but I'm seriously considering doing-so for this ... maybe the setting is just broad enough that it lends itself to gaming. There's also a whole new history of genre for me to shamelessly harvest for ideas.

Anybody else doing anything with this? Figure October tis the season, if no other.

Well, I've never purchased it per se. ;)

I'm glad you and your wife are enjoying it so much. The first graphic novel is called "Black Planet" and you can find it here on Amazon.

F.Y.I.: GR is putting out a book called "Noir" which covers noir-style games; but not pulp-style. Keep an eye out.

I bought it without even reading a review (out of character for me, but the cover and description really grabbed my attention) and have had no qualms since.

The art is fantastic, the characters are real and fleshed out, and the world really captures the theme of year-round Halloween that Dan Brereton was shooting for. Overall, a superb product.

Plus, if I were to ever play a super-intelligent scientist, I would have to base him off of Doc Horror. I can't think of a more original spin on such an old archetype as the good Doctor.

Its a great book. It stays true to the comic (which I realize does not mean much to those who have not read the comics) and it adds a whole new dimension to the M&M game. My only complaint or hesitation with it is the fact that I think it would be very difficult to take an existing campaign for M&M and intregrate this into it. The only possibility might be to say it is an alternate world thatthe characters encounter from time to time. Starting a campaign with Nocturnals as the backdrop would be the best use, I think.
