D&D 4E Nintendo DS homebrew 4e game aids.

I was thinking 2 programs. One for input on the pc or mac that you are starting from. This creates a character sheet file which you then copy over to the NDS.
On the DS you would start the program which would ask you which character sheet file to load.
On the touch screen would be various tabs which would cause different parts of the character sheet to display at the top. Also, I was thinking there would be a combat status screen which be used to keep track of HPs, status, initiative order, used powers, etc...

This way, no actual character sheet input is done on the limited (aka lacking keyboard) DS...

I am currently teaching myself C++ to try and accomplish this.

I don't think a 4E aid would be beyond the capabilities of the DS, but it would certainly be a very ambitious and difficult project. If you are sufficiently skilled and brave to attempt it, I wish you luck. :)

Fortunately, there is a free homebrew DS development kit you can download here: devkitPro » devkitPro Windows Installer. It has plenty of examples and test programs to get you started.

Unfortunately, the API documentation for it isn't great, and you would have to own a DS flash cartridge to actually run any such software on your DS.

Hopefully no one minds me bumping this topic up, but I am interested in joining in on the project in some way. I was actually thinking of doing this at my school. I'm learning some C++ skills right now and I don't know what can be worked on, but I figured I'd pop this up if your still around and paying attention to it.

It's an interesting idea, although I'm not convinced it's worth the time involved just for the benefit of having a handy character sheet. I think if I were doing this I'd have the bottom screen show a zoomed-out version of the sheet. The sheet would be broken into discrete sections, and tapping on one once would show that section on the top screen. Selecting an "edit" soft button would swap screens and bring up a virtual keyboard, allowing you to do data entry.

Heh. And I had a DS devkit until Monday, when my whole DS game company got laid off by our head office.

Sorry to hear that Piratecat
Well, DS Devkit, Palib can be used. That is what the Dice Roller that I've seen was made under.
