D&D General New Player Question: wouldn't carrying a bow or crossbow be really noisy for a Rogue?

Hi. I'm setting up my first character in the Rogue class and I don't understand why a thief would want to carry around a quiver of arrows or a cross-bow. Both seem incredibly noisy for a thief. If you strapped down the arrows or cross-bow it seems like it would be too slow to get them ready for quick combat. Isn't there a quieter ranged weapon to carry around? Can you just throw daggers, kunai, shurikens, or something else?

If you are playing D&D 5th edition, a Stealth check will generally determine how quiet you are in situations where it matters, no matter what equipment you are carrying, so the crossbow and bolts won't be a burden, don't worry. Yes, it is an abstraction from real world physics, but you'll see a lot of that in the game.

That been said, you can totally throw daggers, yes! It is a cool concept, by the way. That x-bow can really come in handy, though, when your target is too far away from your dagger-throwing.

Edit: grammar and stuff

Thank you both. I'm pretty nervous about starting up and don't want to screw up and ruin things for my party. I appreciate the advice. I'm running a Tabaxi rogue and was thinking of asking the the DM if I can outfit the character with weapons that are more ninja style than the traditional western middle-ages type weapons.

There's an applicable table of weapon listings in the Dungeon Master's Guide (p. 41).

Can substitute shuriken for the dart, and hankyu for the shortbow, both Japanese weapons.

If you're a bit concerned about the size and noise of a bow or crossbow, never doubt the effectiveness of the sling. It's very easy to carry and conceal, and a pouch of stones filled with wadded cloth is both quiet and unobtrusive. It doesn't have the range or damage that a bow has, but for sneaking about town it's far better. When traveling, I'd pull out the bow though.

Don't worry about the crossbow. They are not silent so if you want to be stealthy you would not carry one anyway.
