Having read some of the Book of Swords series and Book of Lost Swords series by Fred Saberhagen (excellent books btw, I recommend them): here are the names of the twelve swords that his books were about, in no particular order:

Shieldbreaker
Woundhealer
Coinspinner
Farslayer
Dragonslicer
Doomgiver
Stonecutter
The Mindsword
Wayfinder
Townsaver
Sightblinder
Soulcutter

Each had a special property, and a weakness or drawback that was associated with that property. With Farslayer, for example, you named the person you wanted dead, and hurled the sword, which unerringly then flew to bury itself in that person's body. However, it stayed there once it killed that person, and if they had any friends with them, and they knew you wanted that guy dead, you could very well find Farslayer coming back to get you. Likewise, Woundhealer healed anyone it touched, but thus was utterly useless as a weapon in combat.

Hope that gives you some ideas!

From Appolinaire's "La Chanson du Mal-Aimé"

I have highlighted the sword names for the few of you who may not speak French ;)

The last two swords are not named, by the way...

Durandal was the legendary sword of Roland.

There's Twinkle and, um, Drizzt's other scimitar.

Masamune is everywhere in Japanese sword-oriented fantasy.

I don't know if the Sword of Damocles had a name, per se, but it's a neato classical reference.

And Norse myth and lore has bajillions of names, but I can't be bothered seeking my books just yet - maybe tomorrow.

do those french sword names have any special meanings in english?

Tleailaxu,

Not really, although "Pâline" reminds one of "Pâle", which means pale. I just always thought them to be fairly evocative. I just checked to see if I could find an Englsih translation online, but no luck, I'm afraid...

Morax, Solas, Flaures, Beleth, Elidor, Orias, and Albion - the Seven Swords of Wayland.

Hey, I still remember them all!

There's Changeling, from the Chronicles of Morgaine - sort of a Sphere of Annihilation built into a sword.

There's Blackwand, Iceflame, Pathfinder, and Godslayer from Steven Brust's Taltos series - well, those are their short names. Translated from the original Serioli, they're Magical-Wand-for-Creating-Death-in-the-form-of-a-Black-Sword, Dagger-Shaped-Bearer-of-Fire-That-Burns-Like-Ice, Artifact-in-Sword-Form-That-Searches-for-the-True-Path, and... uh... can't remember Godslayer's real name.

There are supposed to be seventeen Great Weapons (of course), but I don't know any of the others...

IMC

There is Amlas Endünë the Sword that is Death
and Greyfelorn the Silver Shard

And Hatherak the Bleek which is a Stone Sword of the Bleekstep Mountains that was used to defeat the Amlas Arazun

But my world has a few created languages so I go into detail at naming my swords as a DM or as a Player

Such as Hawakinsa Uliaramsidhe is Hawkins Sword of the Silent Sun which is my highest level characters Sunblade
