D&D 5E My Players defeated Strahd in one round and it was glorious! (CoS Spoilers inside)

OB1

Jedi Master
Been DMing a CoS campaign for two PCs (Paladin and Cleric) on and off for the last year. Over the long holiday weekend, we finally finished, and in the climatic battle, they defeated Strahd in a single round. The PCs were 11th level.

They loved it, I loved it, and we agreed it was one of the best APs we've ever played.

For the last year, the PCs ground their way across Barovia looking for the three items they needed to defeat Strahd, and everywhere they went, he harassed them, killed their allies, undid their accomplishments, and always got away. They grew to hate the Devil Strahd over that year.

Over the weekend, with the Sword and Amulet in hand, Strahd was no longer able to attack them directly, instead going wherever they weren't to wreck havoc on the people the PCs had tried to help, trying to break the PCs spirit and get them to give up.

Instead, the plan backfired, and the PCs stormed Castle Ravenloft.

They were lucky to face Strahd in his parent's crypt, where he could not easily escape. He won initiative and tried to charm the Cleric (to turn her against the Paladin) but was thwarted by the Devotion Paladin's aura. Two smites (one a crit), a spiritual weapon attack and a hit with the sun sword, and Strahd was dead when he started his second turn in the sun swords daylight.

My players erupted in a cheer and a fair bit of cursing surrounding the death of the Devil Strahd.

When I asked them during wrap up if they thought the final battle was anticlimactic, they said not at all. That they had been so worried that after everything they'd done in the campaign that it could end with them dead and Strahd winning, they were simply relieved when they took him out so quickly. They had thought they were going on a suicide mission with almost no chance to defeat him. To have survived, and then returned to the Sword Coast with a handful of children from the Werewolf den, was more than they had wished for.

Curious if anyone else had a similar experience of an easy defeat of Strahd that left your players feeling joyous!

Sounds pretty epic to me. I probably would be cheering too - especially since how easily things can go sideways for players in CoS.

It's so nice to hear how a quick victory after so much really is a thrill. The stars align when story and mechanics work together to create a satisfying conclusion.

Doesn't sound deflating at all. Clearly the PCs quested for the right tools for the job. For that long term plan to pay off must have been very satisfying for them. :)

Level 11 would definitely give the PCs a lot of extra juice in the fight against Strahd; the pacing guidelines indicate that PCs would normally be level 9 at the final confrontation and reach level 10 upon completion of the module.

In either case, I structured the climax so the highlight happens after the final battle: the PCs must choose between slaying Strahd and escaping the realm (knowing the dark powers will rebirth the vampire a month later), sacrifice one of their own to take Strahd's place as the dark powers' prisioner, or sacrifice the child Arabelle, the vessel for Strahd's mortal soul, in order to permanently break the dark powers' curse. Hopefully it'll be a fun moment.

I think that fight sounds like it was awesome. In the end, if they thought it was great, it was great.

It's also wonderful to hear how invested the players were in the game and the mission. Many of us can only hope to have a group so engaged in our game.

Sounds like you all had a great time, which is all anyone can hope for at the end of a long campaign. May we all be so fortunate!

My players are still scrounging around the Amber Temple... with their new Death Slaad pet (due to a little meta-gaming by my son, but he was so excited that I allowed them to knock it out after an honest battle and perform a little surgery to extract the gem).

Just curious - did your PCs take out the crystal heart prior to the showdown?

Glad you and your players enjoyed it. My group personally would have complained that the fight was too easy and not worth the campaign time invested in it. (These same players complained that Balors in 4E didn't hit hard enough and demanded that I increase the monster's damage so they could actually feel threatened. )

No, they never went to the Amber Temple, and with it being just the two of them, I'm not sure they would have survived if they did. The fight against Baba Lysaga very nearly killed them.

That sounds awesome! I hinted at Strahds return as they were leaving Barovia for the Sword Coast. Plan is to take these two characters directly into Storm Kings Thunder, I may add a complication in that module that Stahd has his minions hunting down the characters in Faerun and allow them to eventual go back to Barovia to finish the job.
