Instead of a new class, what about a variant of the Beastmaster Ranger?

Also, a griffon mount is very powerful for low levels. Flight is very strong, as are the attacks of a griffon. It probably wouldn't be fair to the other players if one player gets to ride around on a griffon right away at level one. How is this suggestion:

Your animal companion begins as a young griffon, a golden lion with a beak and talons and small wings. It's not large enough to ride or to fly yet, but that will happen later. Over several levels, the griffon grows larger until you can ride it. At higher levels, its wings get stronger until it can fly.

Another idea is to use the prestige class in the Unearthed Arcana article (http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/prestige-classes-and-rune-magic) as a base. Develop a short Griffon Rider prestige class for the higher levels when a griffon is a good mount.

Not all that helpful for critiquing what you have, I know, but I agree with arjomanes above. A mounted combatant is not really enough for its own class, let alone a Griffon Rider. Far too specific a concept. However, it might make a good subclass for several classes or prestige class for several.

Don't forget, there are 'some' options already available to you, including feats for mounted stuff - but if you really want to shine, I understand wanting to make a subclass etc. Just don't think you need to write a whole class. Instead of doing this with different subclasses, simply write up different mounted subclasses for several classes - this could still distinguish 'orders' or different factions of the 'cavalry'.
