D&D 5E My dwarf fighter is always last into combat?

Am I the only one experiencing this?

Scenario - enemies enter room/corridor which is 30 feet or say 60 feet from where my character stands. I win iniative however based on speed i'm either having to do a double move to get there or doing regular movement but not attacking. often the elves/humans are getting in the first attack

I want to see if this happens to others and what have you done to get around this.

Pss dwarf I have shortbows which I have short listed for 50 gp. Being slow is one of the tradeoffs you made to have a +2 con, speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor, etc.
There magic and classes which will up your speed. But I will need to know how magic heavy your dm allows.

If your DM allows feats, you could take Mobile for +10 to your movement.

As others have suggested, you could carry throwing axes and make a ranged attack in the first round. Another option would be to Ready an attack vs. someone approaching you.
