So stuff I noticed about Animal Companions, they mention that they provide Masstiff, Hawk, and Panther as examples, but thier are more then that for the Beastmaster. Constrictor Snake, Poisonous Snake, Wolf, Riding Horse, as well as others such as bat, cat, raven, and so on. The Constrictor Snake in Particular is really good, Blindsight, biting, and Grappling, and its large enough to ride as a mount! The Poisonous Snake is cool too because it well poison your enemies. Both have Land and Swim Speed. The Wolf is straight up better then the Mastiff. The Riding Horse is great for those who don't want to wierd people out or who are urban rangers.
Familiars are neat, but minor outside of the Chainlock. You will almost never use the Familiar's attack if your a Chainlock, but wow they make great spies, each with the ability to turn invisible (just chainlock familiars). Possible exception is the Sprites poison arrows, especially if she's hanging around the Paladin while he has Crusader's Mantle up. Also being able to use the find familiar spell to change your familiars form makes the spell useful even after you first cast it which is a first.
A Chainlock's Familiar is still a Familiar so technically the ability to change its type should still apply, so you can have a Celestial Quasit or Imp and a Fiendish Sprite. Weird.
Mounts, specifically for the Paladin via Find Steed. The Best Choices are clearly the Elk and Warhorse, although we don't have stats for the Pony or Camel.
The Warhorse in particlur is awesome, with a hoof attack of 2D6 +4, and Trampling Charge, knock the target prone and get another attack against it after moving 20 feet to attack. And the Paladin's Mount is Intelligent so it can attack.
The way the Oath of the Ancients is designed your still stuck with a Celestial Mount if you plan on turning Fiends and Fey.
Also there is no alignment restrictions on the Paladin's mount, so you can be a halfling Lawful Good Paladin of Devotion of Torm, and still have a Fiendish Mastiff for a mount.
At least it unaligned, instead of Evil. Its intelligent fiend, but its not evil, just misunderstood ;p
I'm thinking of a Paladin Tiefling with a Fiendish or Celestial Warhorse the understands Infernal.
