I don't want to read TOO much into a blurry blow-up of the product picture, but tentatively, I'm a fan. The beholder is spooooky, the adventurers look like they're going to need a new pair of pants, and for some reason there is a zeppelin crashing into a tower in an explosion of lightning? The logo is nice and small and gets out of the way. I am ambivalent about all the slightly awkward self-affirmation (and perhaps slightly pre-emptive nature) of the "greatest roleplaying game in teh world!" text.

Solid, I think. More to be said later, I'm sure.

I like the lack of clutter from the logo and whatnot. Love that ampersand. Love the beholder and what I can make of the dwarf underneath it. He seems to have a nice hammer and appropriate armor. Glad to see a demi-human featured. Not sure if that's a female in front, who seems to be wearing some form of turban and yelling "Avengers Assemble" to the rest of the party. As was said, the picture's a bit blurry so more will be revealed. There's a bat flying about up above the statue arm, maybe it's a familiar. The lightning blasts are really chaotic. Are they emanating from the beholder's eyes?

Have to admit, the 1E covers are so engrained in my mind that nothing else takes their place in my mind when I think of Dungeons and Dragons hardcovers. So ideally I'd like a double-paged spread showing various adventurers traipsing through a scrolling environment and encountering different beasties one of which must be a Roper who appears to be a moss covered cat turd. If I ranked the cover art alone, I'd say:

1) 1E, the classic cover
2) 4E, giant Orcus. Really liked that one.
3) 1E, Easley.
4) 2E, the Monstrous Manual.
5) 3E & 3.5E, the Higginbotham covers. Nothing against the guy and his work, I just prefer drawings instead of the "faux ancient tome" look.

I'll wait til I have 5E in hand before adjusting the ranks.

The posing looks pretty awkward. Why is the dwarf looking over his shoulder at the beholder? Why is the human(?) turning his(?) back to it? Why isn't the beholder just zapping them while they have their guard down?

Maybe the beholder just appeared. Like the guy in front is going "That's it, we killed all the monsters!" And the dwarf is going "Uh, Bill?"

It looks like the beholder just came down those stairs and either surprised the party, or they were already fleeing it.

It's not bad. It's the least of the three core book covers they've released, in my opinion, but still better than 4e by a mile. I prefer the style of books looking like mystical tomes rather than showing scenes, but at least the scene here is reasonably well-rendered.

This is definitely my favorite of the covers we've seen.

I'm not really digging the trade dress, but I was hoping for something like the recent 1st Edition reprint, which this is about as far from as possible. But the artwork is solid across the board.

My feelings exactly!

The MM covers looks the best of the three for surel.
