D&D 5E Monk Weapons

GainVanquish

First Post
Hi Guys

Im currently playing HotDQ. I am a Tiefling Monk at level 3. Why i understand monks are primarily melee fighters i was wondering how i could incorporate a little range fighting with decent damage possibly without losing my extra attack. Im very close to level 4 and was wondering if to take the mobile feat or take the bonus to my stats.

My stats are as follows
STR - 15
DEX - 16
CON - 14
INT - 12
WIS - 14
CHA - 14

Also does anyone know where i could find a decent listing of all monk weapons with their damage?

Thanks and excuse my questions if they seem stupid, only been playing for a little while

Thanks

The definition of Monk weapons is pretty simple. Shortswords or any simple weapon without the two-handed or heavy property. See the list of weapons in the equipment section of the PHB.

Darts are monk weapons.

The weapon damage isn't really a big deal, since monks do their unarmed strike damage with any monk weapon (unless the weapon damage is higher, but in a couple more levels it won't be.) Pick a weapon you like thematically.

Your stats are already extremely good, from a statistical probability context. However, DEX and WIS are extra important since they impact monk abilities, including AC. I played a monk up to level 8 (just died last weekend as a matter of fact), and I solved my range problems by a) having a movement rate of 55 so I could zip around all over the place, and b) either take the magic initiate feat to get an eldritch blast, or dip into another class to get a long range cantrip.

Thanks Guys, currently using darts but not a amount of damage.

Sacrosanct >> im currently using unarmed defence so AC15 (10 + 3 (DEX) + 2 (WIS))

so is it worth not taking the ability score increase and maybe take the mobile feat. The ability score increase could move my dex to 18 (+4)

Sorry guys another question also. Is an unarmed strike always such as a punch, kick, elbow headbutt or so on there for always 1d4 + Dex?

"...monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don't have the two-handed or heavy property."

I don't know what is the RAI for Monks, but I have the feeling they might have wanted to make them exactly poor ranged combatants.

But really, darts and slings could totally be allowed, they don't have a much better range than thrown weapons, and the damage is always overtaken by the Martial Arts damage.

Uhm... I think they aren't, because they are ranged weapon.

I think instead daggers, handaxes and light hammers (all melee weapons that can be thrown) are 'monk weapons'. Not a great range, but still.

Depends on the DM, I guess. My monk was the classic ninja, so my weapons were a ninja-to and shuriken. shuriken are more like darts than anything else. They certainly aren't a melee weapon. It wasn't game breaking or anything.

Umm...+1 to all unarmed and monk weapon attacks damage, +1 to hit with all such attacks, and +1 to AC is far superior to an extra 10ft of movement in a class that hands out extra movement regularly.

Just sayin'...

I get that but on the flip side moving in and out of range almost of a monster with a multiple attack in between is also something not to be sniffed at as a monk imo, but then again i havent been playing as long as all you guys
