How do you store your miniatures? Right now I use compartment sewing cases, but they seem to small. Wondering how the other half lives. :)

Here is how I do it

For my Bablyon 5 and Warhammer 40K miniatures I have a glass miniature cabinet for them.

As far as D&D goes, I store my player's figures in a small chessex storage box. I have 3 other chessex miniature boxes for the scores of monsters and humans they will encounter.

Finally I have a plastic storage box that I store my D&D plastic miniatures in. I sorted these out into little ziplock bags by types.

I went to my local department store, headed to the fishing and hunting area, and bought a great big multi-drawer tackle-box. It's awesome. I currently have two.

One has a top and bottom layer, each of which is about 24" by 12" about 3" deep. The layers are divided into a bunch of compartments, each of which is about 2" by 3". I can fit my largest Large minis in them no problem. The whole thing snaps up tight and has a carrying handle. It cost me about $8.

The other one is basically a nylon case with three big pockets (one on each side, one in the front). The pockets are big enough for all my dice (I have about 500 dice--really), a stapler, a roll of tape, scissors, markers, pens, pencils, all the stuff I need at a game. The inner chamber has 4 plastic boxes, each about 10" by 8" by about 1" deep. Each is made up of a bunch of little compartments, with removable side walls. I get all my medium and small minis in these. This one cost about $12.

Here's how we do it:

1. D&D plastic minis and Mageknights are stored in whatever is at hand...plastic pencil boxes (the kind you buy for your kids for school, lots of different sizes), old cigar boxes (you can get these at tobacco stores for $1), zip lock baggies, plastic compartment cases for crafts/nuts and bolts, etc. Walmart has a plastic compartment case that will fit your larger minis. $5 and you can find it in the hardware section.

2. Metal minis are stored in gun/pistol cases. These cases are hard black plastic with foam cushions inside. You can cut holes/indentations into the foam to fit the mini just right. I did look at some of the mini cases made specifically for mini storage, but found the gun/pistol cases to be much more cost effective...a gun/pistol case costs half what a mini case costs. You can also lock up your minis (gun cases have a hole so you can slap a Master lock on it) if that floats your boat.

Thanks,
Rich

Yep. Same here. I have two large Plano brand tackle boxes full. (I actually should get a third box as the Huge minis take up quite a bit of space.)

Works very well - the boxes I have cost about $18 each I believe.

Three words: The Container Store

A bit pricey but an excellent selection of storage containers (stackable, too).

I use one of those workbench screw/nail/small part organizer sets of drawers. Not the exact model shown in the pic, but one with 18 drawers in it, the size of the drawers in the bottom corners. Most figs fit easily standing up, but a few of the bigger figs have to lay flat (I've lined those drawers with headliner from my local fabric store). That's not what I transport them in, just what they "live" in at my house. We play at my house most of the time so they are very handy.

Our group uses a rather labor intensive method of Epoxying a strong magnet inside the base of a Chessex dice box, then we epoxy a small piece of tin onto the bottom of the mini base. The mini stays nicely protected in the case and does not rub against foam or other packing material and wear the paint off. The individual cases can just be packed into a box, or for the ones we use frequently and transport to whereever we are gaming, into an old hardsided briefcase or the custom case our other DM had his father build for him years ago. As long as you don't drop the box or case, the magnets are strong enough to keep the minis from falling off even when tipped sideways (Except for a fewof the larger minis).
