Medieval Jokes?

the Jester

Legend
Anyone have any good medieval jokes? I'm writing a story whose protagonist is a fool, and I am having trouble finding any.

Thanks in advance!

Do you mean faux-medieval fantasy jokes or actual non-fantastic medieval?

Well, the story is pretty non-fantastic, with no magical elements, monsters, etc. However, it is set in a non-real world setting. Basically, I am looking for jokes that my fool can tell.

Google "Reynard the Fox." You won't get jokes per se, but you can come up with a handful of short tales, generally humorous, vulgar, and/or gruesome, that might fit the bill.

For something slightly bawdier, you could always look at The Decameron. There's also The Canterbury Tales. These will have humourous tales you can use and probably individual jokes too.

I believe they are out of copyright :P

More of a taunt:

'I'm goin' prehistoric on your a$$!"

Also, weren't lymerics popular then as well (too lazy to google/wikipedie)?

How about "Till Eulenspiegel":

A German folk hero of the 14th century, Till Eulenspiegel was a peasant trickster whose jokes and pranks became the source of many folk tales. The jests and practical jokes, which generally depend on a pun, are broadly farcical, often brutal, and sometimes obscene, but they have a serious theme. In the figure of Eulenspiegel, the individual gets back at society; the stupid yet cunning peasant demonstrates his superiority to the narrow, dishonest, condescending townsman, as well as to the clergy and nobility. Through the centuries his character was featured in many literary and musical works, including a tone poem by Richard Strauss.
