Mass Heal and spontaneous casting

One of my players is running the cleric, and was asking about spontaneous casting - it states anything with 'cure' in the name can be spontaneously cast by a good cleric/good-diety-worshipping cleric. And there is a cure spell of each level until 9th. Does that mean at 9th-spell level clerics don't get any spontaneous changing? I assume they left Heal spells out of the spontaneous list on purpose - any ideas why? It seems like they could add a harm version for the evil types and it would go along with the idea of channeling spell energy into healing/harming power.

Also, in looking at mass heal, I notice that its target is 'one or more creatures' within 30' of each other. In the cure spells, there is a limit of affected creatures depending on caster level, but no such mention here. I assume it's because it is a 9th level spell, so any and all creatures in that 30' diameter are healed. Is that the case?

Yep. Though you can also use metamagic on those spells, like Empower or Maximize.

Either because Heal and Harm are very powerful, or because they only wanted to allow the fundamental ability with basic spells.

Looks like, yes.

Hmmm, never noticed the number of targets limit on the mass cure spells.

Note that the cleric suffers from full round action to apply metamagic to spontaniously cast spells, so no more than 5' step when you do so.

Yup.

Being able to cast Heal, Mass as a sponanteous spell would be too good. It is an awesome spell.

....but what the Clr 17 + should really be memorizing is Miracle!

That's because the limit never matters in practice. :)

Some of us feel that casting mass heal at all is too good. :p

Correct. If this makes 9th level slots seem less attractive, he might want to look at the Hierophant prestige class, which effectively delays gaining top-level cleric spell slots in return for doing interesting things with the lower spell levels - one of which is swapping a spell slot for a Spell-Like Ability usable (given some tradeoffs) up to six times a day.

If you would like to spont cast heal and mass heal then there is a very simple solution that you can use. Simply take spontaneous domain casting from the phb II and select the healing domain. This is the only way that I will ever run a cleric anymore it has so much more potential than the others.
