we actually had a cmg dming chat about just such things. i posted lots of recipes for homemade playdoh and ludo and other (hopefully) handy items.

it works pretty decently if handled well (mix, mix, mix) but there are other options that work equally well.

have you tried it yet? is any particular part giving you problem?

I have been mixing
2 c flour
2 c water
1 c salt
4 TBS cream of tartar
2 TBS of oil
and a little red food coloring with blue to get the gray for stone structures.

I haven't been able to find the right nuke time yet though.
It is usually pretty good.
What molds have you found that are about 1" cubes?
How does it hold up over time?

i like these 2 recipes-

Sun Clay
Ingredients: 2 cups salt, 1 cup cornstarch, and water.
Mix the salt and 2/3 cup water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring until the salt is dissolved. Remove from heat. In a separate bowl, slowly add 1/2 cup water to the cornstarch. Stir until smooth, then add to the salt mixture. Return to low heat and cook until smooth, stirring frequently. Store in a sealed plastic bag.
Place the clay on a tray or paper plate and have children work outdoors or in a sunny area indoors. Give children a lump of clay to model. Children may decorate their sun sculptures with small stones, leaves etc..
Place the finished items in the sun to dry. Challenge children o predict how long it will take for the sculptures to dry. When this clay hardens in the sun, it won't crumble.

The Best Cooked Play Dough
Ingredients: 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon oil, food coloring.
For group settings double the recipe.
Combine flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a saucepan. Mix liquids and gradually stir them into dry ingredients. When mixture is smooth, cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Remove from heat and knead until smooth. Can use unsweetened Kool-Aid instead of food coloring. The Kool-Aid will color it and make it small great.
Play Sand Clay
Materials
6 cups of fine sand
1 cup white school glue
water, enough to make clay form
outdoor working surface
old mixing container and a stirring stick
Mix Glue and sand together, add enough water to make the sand stick into shapes
Now to make a permanent sand castle!
Pack into different shape containers Turn upside down, and air dry. You can use small recycled scoops, tubs, cardboard tubes, small boxes, orange juice cans, and cups.

don't look for molds of 1" cubes, make sheets and press cough drops into them (or jolly ranchers) to get a stone wall look :)

For some reason I can't see how that looks like a stone wall?!?

Do you mean that you put them under the sheet and press?

Did either of you use pop-sticks?

Either way do you know of any molds?

You should consider working with some dense polystyrene and a hot wire cutter. When I used to play Warhammer as a younger lad I made some serious table-top terrain.

Cut out the object you want in the foam and then coat it a wash of watered down plaster and let it dry. The plaster hides the foam's texture and creates a bumpy rough layer which, when painted makes for some serious stone effects. Paint it a base coat of dark grey or black and then dry-brush with some lighter greys or whites and voila: instant rocks, walls, ruins etc.

I'll see if I have some pics and if you want an in-depth explanation on how to make other terrain pieces very cheaply with foam, just lemme know.

Cheers

Pictures Please!

I have never heard of using dough to make features, but I like the idea. I should have thought of it before! I am new to the terrain bit, so I am not surprised at what I don't know.

I just tried making my first piece and I am half way through it. But I think I have the wrong type of foam board for ground effects. What types (brands) do you use?

I used plaster spackle to make a river and it turned out wonderfully! I got the idea from Hirst Arts page.

Check out http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/

Also there is a yahoo group called terrainmakers that has tons of awesome ideas.
Terrainmakers also has links to a few different major sites, that like terragenesis has step by step procedures with pictures of all of them for you to compare your own work to.
