Lycanthropy: Disease or Curse?

Hey rules masters, I dont have my books handy with me here at work and I had a question. Is Lycanthropy a Curse or a Disease? If I remember correctly, under the Paladin's Immunity to Disease entry it states that he is immune to magical diseases such as Mummy's Rot and Lycanthropy. However, I also recall that in my Races of Faerun book, the Lycanthropy template is titled "The Curse of Lycanthropy"

Why do I ask this? Well in the campaign im playing in, one of my party members was bitten by a Werewolf but we dont know if he made his save or not. We have a strong reason to believe that he may have already turned (he took off in the night and returned with blood on his hands and clothing and remembers nothing) although the DM could just be messing with us ;) I would like to try and use my Paladin's Remove Disease ability on him but will it work?

Cheers,

All indications I've ever seen are that it is a disease. I suspect the template title is more prosaic than literal. Now curing it with a palandins ability is something different. I've always heard that it involves either a quest or a cleric with cure disease and remove curse spells. But then again I've never researched this issue under 3ed or 3.5 either. This also does not take into account this may be a story arc by your DM and may require something special to remove it.:)

Disease, but not. :) The paladin does resist it as a disease, but once a person has contracted it, you have to follow the methods described in the section to cure it. From the SRD you need a remove disease of a 12th level or better cleric. So, ignoring the call specifically for a cleric, your pally needs to be 24th level, and even your epic paladin needs to get to the person within 3 days of being bitten.
