Live voice distortion.

Hiya guys,

EDIT: FIRST OF ALL, SORRY FOR POSTING THIS HERE, BUT IT'S BEEN IN THE TECH FORUM FOR A WHILE AND RECIEVED ZERO INTEREST, NOT ONE REPLY, HOPEFULLY SOMEBODY HERE CAN HELP.

Right, I've been banging my head against a brick wall for five days now looking for the right software to do what I want. Hopefully, some of you damn techno-lifesavers out there can help me!

Basic rundown is this: I'm looking for a piece of software that can take in simple speech via a mic, and distort it without needing it to be recorded and played back at a later date. I KNOW there is programs out there capable of this, finding them however seems to be beyond me!

The main uses of this is for a game of D&D I'm running, starting this Sunday. Very simple, Ogres for instance would have my voice, but distorted into a deep baratone with heavy distortion, for a rough-round-the-edges loud brash effect. Goblins on the other hand, would have my voice in a much higher pitch, and probably sped up slightly.

This would fit in perfectly to my game, as I always thought the idea of 99% of creatures speaking one language was a little testing, at least this means they'd all have their own play on "common" as a language, and make things a little more interesting.

For anyone that can help point me in the direction, my thanks in advance, I've received pointers and tips from this place in the past, and it is DEFINITLY held in my highest esteem!

Thanks guys.

-Ben G, England.

p.s. remember that it is important that the effects be live, not record & edit, as I'll be conversing with players in real time... cheers guys!

Can't help directly but if I were you I would first go here-

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=free+voice+synthesizer+software&spell=1

Then go to each location and check out their software. Each place that has a forum, I would register and post your particular situation (bookmark the forums in a special folder in your favorites files), then make the rounds over the next couple of days to see if anyone has responded. I know it isn't the quick help you hoped to get but if you wind up with no help here you will be thankful if you have started this process while there is still time to glean something before Sunday.

Good luck! :)

Go find one of these Ekara Microphone . My 5-year old daughter has one, and it's a hoot! You can make your voice higher or lower with the click of a button. Disney sells similar items, if that one's too "girly" for you. :D

This is for a D&D game, right? Then General Discussion is okay for it, since you're really looking for the effect more than the software. No problem.

I'd have to say that a non-software solution will probably be cheaper. Check out any music store, and look for a cheap effects/distortion box - you can get ones that do multiple effects. They might also be able to supply some info on software to do that.

You can use Garage Band to alter the pitch of your voice. It's part of the iLife '04 Suite, available for $29. The catch is that you need to be using a Macintosh running OS X 10.3 or better, to use Garage Band.
