Knowledge(Nature) and Survival

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
I know this question has probably been asked before but, what is the REAL differnece between these two? I think that Knowledge(Nature) is stuff like knowing the differnet parts of an animal or plant and for plants how they reproduce. I think survival is knowing what is good to eat and what is bad to eat, how to tell if an annimal has been near by and stuff like that. Also how to find a good sleeping spot.

Knowledge(Nature): The SRD/PHB doesn't really give a good definition for this skill but in Masters of the Wild, there is a Knowledge(Nature) vs. Wilderness Lore (the book was written for 3.0).

Survival: You can track, predict the weather, and determine where true north is. Not get lost and get fortitude saves in bad weather.

Well, yes. It does.

Knowledge(Nature) - answer questions about animals, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, plants, seasons and cycles, weather and vermin and other things found in an aboveground, natural environment. Get a +2 to survival checks aboveground.

Survival - find food, protect yourself from environmental effects, avoid being lost, avoid natural hazards, predict the weather, follow tracks and find north. All of these work in more-or-less any environment.

I can make a fire using a bow drill I have crafted myself using hand-made stone knives.

This is Survival.

I know that 'gaters, over the course of generations, build and defend their own pools in swamps, and care for their young unlike most reptiles.

This is Knowledge (nature).

edit: I admit that in Real Life there is less difference between the two. Clearly, as you learn how to survive in the wild, you learn a great deal about nature. But in real life things aren't divided up neatly into separate skill slots.
