Hm. I'd have to go with... Mystara. It always seemed more open to me, with less of a metaplot. That being said, there's a lot to Mystara that is a bit lame - some very campy stuff in it.

I guess I just prefer D&D to AD&D, really, and Mystara has a slight edge. Truth be told, though, if I was going for a generic D&D world, I'd go with Krynn. I'm not a huge DL fan (and I know I just said I don't like metaplot, which is kind of ironic), but I think the world of Krynn is just dripping with good flavour as opposed to the others.

But, yeah, looking at your options, I'd go Mystara.

Wait, Mystara is the D&D "known world", right? As in, Karameikos, Northern Reaches, et al?

Mystara would be my suggestion, but I also suggest making the land masses / map scale larger. Like changing over 8 mile wide hexes over to 24 mile wide hexes.

well, i DM a lot of DL, and for this time, i want some "old school", you know?

yes, mystara as in know/hollow world, karameikos and stuff

Those are easily my two favorite official D&D settings, so tough call. . . but I'm going to go with Mystara. Mystara really seems to do better with Sense of Wonder for me than Greyhawk does and, for Basic D&D, that's really important. Greyhawk is great but, IMHO, is better suited to pseudo-historical fun. Mystara definitely has the edge for pure fantasy.

I'd have to go Mystara too. ALthough Greyhawk is my fave setting, Mystara just feels more right for the classic Keep. Also Mystara comes with an easy choice of location for said borderlands: the borders of the Brokenlands (and Karameikos IIRC). In Greyhawk there's no end of controversy as to which borderlands to choose from. And you don't want to start a controversy with Greyhawk nuts, we're freaks. :D

ehehe, lots of good tips!

i must confes, my first view fo mystara was de 2ed box, so i didnt like it very much.

but now, im buying some d&d classic adventures, and im starting to get into the feel.

greyhawk, on the other hand, seems to have lots of cool places and adventures, like the tharizdun or the vault of the drow and teh temple of elemental evil (please do correct me if im wrong about the locations!).

i see both as "old school". i have more mystara material, i think, i i cant stop reading about many adventures by gary gygax set in greyhawk!

oh my...

If you can find the old Dragon issues, what really sold me on the greatness of Mystara was the series of 'Voyage of the Princess Ark' stories. Flying sky ships? Scheming shape-changing arachnids? What's not to love?!? :D

I'd totally vote for Mysthawk, or Greytara, where the elves of Alfheim battle the forces of Iuz and Ivid the Undying schemes to fold Karameikos back into the Great Kingdom.

Edit: Ok, I said this on sort of a whim, but looking at a map of Mystara, it would totally work. Replace Thyatis and Ylarium with the GK and the south, Iuz in Thar, the Wolf & TIger Nomads in Ethengar, and you're pretty much set. I think you can figure out where to put the Frost/Snow/Ice Barbarians.
