D&D (2024) Is weapon mastery from your class tied to the mastery property or to individual weapons?

ECMO3

Legend
So as a Ranger I would get 2 masteries at level 1.

Would these two things be individual weapons or all weapons with that mastery.

Would I pick two weapons like say Dagger and Shortsword and get nick and vex when using those, but not when using Scimitars and hand crossbows?

OR

Would I pick two mastery types - say nick and vex and get to use mastery with any weapons I use that have those masteries?

The wording I have seen online is not real clear on this.

I do not have the book but as i understand it the latter. If you are ranger and have proficiency with all weapons and the Nick and Vex masteries they you get to use these masteries if you are using a relevant weapon.

You pick 2 "kinds of weapons" and get the mastery of those weapons.

So if your running 2 hand crossbows, that's 1 choice.

You can change 1(?) after a long rest.

You do not get all Nick weapons. It's more limited.

No, that is not how it works. You pick specific weapons, not specific masteries.

That being said, you can change which weapons you have mastered after a long rest.

You pick 2 "kinds of weapons"
What is a "kind of weapon" though? Is "scimitar" a kind of weapon? Or are "nick weapons" a kind of weapon? The book does not define this term so it is left up to the reader to interpret.

I can't imagine that the difference actually matters except in very rare cases, but I suppose it would matter occasionally.

"kinds of Simple or Martial weapons"

Nick is not a kind of weapon, it is a mastery property.

A scimitar is not a kind of weapon either, it is a weapon (or more specifically a "martial weapon").

I think you're probably right but the syntax is not defined in the book and it is open to be interpreted either way. In particular the wording on Fighter (which is what I was initially reading) is more ambiguous. I just noticed that other classes all give example weapons, heavily implying the interpretation that "kinds of weapons" means "weapons".

Natural language at its finest, resolving conflicts since never.

Well if you want an open interpretation "kind of"...

Then I pick legal weapons and illegal weapons.
Or maybe physical weapons and emotional weapons.
