Ioun Stone questions...

Phoenix8008

First Post
Okay two simple questions about Ioun stones. First, can you have more than one Ioun stone active at the same time? (All the pictures of Ioun stones seem to show multiple stones at the same time...) And second, does one (or more) Ioun stone(s) take up the head/helmet slot for magic item usage?

That's it, and thanks in advance for any help answering these questions.

First: Yes, as many as you can afford (although like ones don't stack)

Second: No, they are slotless.

As a result of being slotless, they're also double the cost because of it. So a Helm of Insight, granting a +1 Insight bonus to AC costs 2500 gp, but the Ioun Stone granting the same costs 5000 gp.

Unfortunately, they also have a tendency to say, "Look at me! I've got a lot of personal wealth invested in rather fragile and easily locatable items!"

You mean like cloaks and circlets and rings and boots and .... ;)

But then, whenever I get an ioun stone I always make sure to get that spell cast on it that increases its hardness by a few points. Just in case!

I personally favor permanent invisibility. :)

only if you put continual flame on them as well.. assuming that your dm does as my last dm did and ruled that the flames were invisible but still emitted light ;)

Still though, that could be a good idea. Although they would be 'much' harder to take down later..lol

How do you get invisible flames that emit light from a continual flame spell? The flames are the source of the radiating light. If you can't see the flame it must be because you can't see the light. If you can see the light, then you must be able to see the flame. The two are linked in a way that I can not comprehend how you could see one but not the other. Besides, you can't target a flame with an invisibility spell as it is not really an object, it is the effect of a spell.
The stone itself would be invisible, but you would have a floating flame orbiting your head. Even if the DM said that the flame was invisible, you would still have a bright source of light floating around your head, but it would potentially look more like the result of a ghostly lights spell than a continual flame on an ioun stone.
This is all my opinion of course.
