D&D 5E Illusionist Question

By RAW can you create spell components with the 14th level Illusionist tradition ability? It says for 1 minute the item is real. It seems to me one could create components for spells and they would work as long as the spell was no longer then 1 minute long to cast. All I saw in the spellcasting section is that the caster needs the item to cast the spell.

I probably wouldn't allow it in my games but officially it seems legitimate to me.

By 14th level, you have learned the secret of weaving shadow magic into your illusions to give them a semi-reality.

It's still an illusion, not a conjuration. Point this out to the player, but allow them try it if they insist. Then roll on the sorcerer's wild magic table to discover the effects.

I wouldn't let it replicate expensive components, on the grounds that semi-real items have no intrinsic value. But I would let them replicate minor components like spider legs and black licorice if the character didn't have an arcane focus or component pouch for some reason (like a prison break).

That's pretty clever.

I would let you do it once and say, "Cool trick and innovative enough I had to let you do it at least once. Now, let's talk about how this should really work in our campaign after the session."

That discussion would reach pretty much something close to the posters above - somewhere between never and in a minor way it works.

By RAW, it works. While the words Semi and Partially are not synonyms...the 1 minute duration of Illusionary Reality covers the Semi verbiage for me.

The much longer duration of the Simulacrum spell, covers the difference for Partial.

If one elects to treat the effect, as similar to a Creation spell, material components are out of bounds, then. Which is not an unreasonable ruling.

Since many players would not dare to venture to be an Illusionist a Wizard, for fear that a DM will nerf their ideas...how many 14th level Illusionists are there really, in the wild? (aka in play)

I see Abjurers and Diviners, aplenty, but tight sphincter DM rulings, makes many a player not even attempt illusion spells.

(Not, that such ignoble sphincter designations, would apply, to any august poster on this board! )🤗

Given that people, commonly state that material component costs are insignificant by 14th level. Something, that saves role playing a shopping trip, might easily get my seal of approval.

Especially, if we have limited time to play before someone has to pick up their children.

Being able to jump into the meaty parts of play, faster, is one of the perks of being high level.
In my opinion, at least.

I love 5e Illusionists, best iteration so far, methinks.🧙🏻‍♀️
