D&D 5E how to handle action surge and quicken spell

I am DM for a party that includes a multi-class fighter/sorcerer. In a recent battle he cast 3 spells casting on one turn using his action, quicken spell as a bonus action and action surge to cast a third spell. I think the spells were hypnotic pattern

It appears this is legal but it seems a bit over the top. Am I missing something?

PHB, page 202...

[SECTION]A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You
must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell,
provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action
this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same
turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.[/SECTION]

As long as he's only casting 1 hypnotic pattern and the other spells are cantrips with casting time 1 action, it's legit.

If he's casting multiple hypnotic patterns (or any spell with a level attached to it), it's not legit.

Yeah, that's certainly the way it reads.

I'd likely let him cast any spell with the action surge, though, treating that as separate from the standard turn.

Thanks, to clarify he cast hypnotic pattern twice (saved the first time) and mirror image as the third spell.

Thanks for the note about the bonus action clarification.

Of course, he could skip the quickened levelled spell, and instead just cast two regular Hypnotics (or whatever), one using his regular action and one using Action Surge.

Good ruling, but technically not RAW or RAI. Sage advice clarified that the restriction for Bonus Action spells does affect both Actions. However, 2 regular action spells do not cause any interference (which is a bit weird), only the Bonus Action spell.

Yes, in a round where you use Action Surge it is far too expensive to cast a spell through your Bonus Action.

So the solution is... to not do that.

(By the way, this is less "weird" than it might seem at first blush. Not because I defend the mechanic, but because it does require you to multiclass a spellcasting class with a martial class. So what I defend is how this can't and shouldn't be a main concern for the designers. In other words, a little weirdness is okay, considering how you must go out of your way to make it happen)

RAW allows for using action surge to cast a 2nd spell. Action surge explicitly allows it and no other rule forbids it. Not sure where you are getting that RAW doesn't allow it?
