How to counter Mordenkainen's Disjunction

Getting to higher levels as a spellcaster has one big threat coming at you, which is Mordenkainen's Disjunction.

I'm thinking about ways to counter it effectively.

Would this work?

Crafting an item, which has a trigger condition (Mordenkainen's Disjunction is cast with the bearer within the radius), that will create an Antimagic Field with a 1 round duration if the trigger condition is met. Prerequisites: Antimagic Field and Contingency?

It's not a perfect protection, but pretty good.

Another idea would be something similar to the ring of counterspells, specifically tailored to counter Mordenkainen's Disjunction.

Anything else, except becoming the chosen of a certain god?

Could you use Wish to render yourself and every item you carry as well as every spell that lies upon you immune to the effects of Mordenkainen's Disjunction? Or is that effect beyond the power of Wish?

Well, You could counterspell it as the caster was casting it...

On one hand players don't like using it unnecessarily because it deprives them of the goodies the badies are carrying...

Wouldn't the baddies usually think in the same fashion? A bit of arrogance and all that?

But if you really insist; your two suggestions - the contigency/AMF, - the ring of VASTLY Improved Counterspelling - are the best ideas.

Getting the party wizard to cast anti-magic and get up close. Fighting types do what they do best without their toys, admittedly all quite hard.

Must plan and prepare the assault like a jewel heist otherwise it will go to the dogs quickly. Can be quite a cool adventure idea actually, requiring the gm to know higher level spells though...

In the module Bastion of Broken Souls there is a Ring of Greater Counterspells. It's like its weaker cousin, except you can put in spells of up to 9th level, including Disjuction.

I'm not sure if this would work, but could you contingency dimension door to the nearest safe spot not in the area of effect? Or some such thing.

Wish can reverse spell effects

One of Wish's abilities is to undo the effects of other spells. I would allow a Wish to undo the effects of Mord's disjunction by restoring permanent magic items for one target at minimum.

I have to agree with you jodyjohnson, it is just not fun having the 'eternal sword of the heavens' disjoined. I spend ages thinking and designing cool stuff to have them permanently wasted. Players would probably riot too.

A wish/miracle for each persons possessions. Question is the xp cost, should anyone wear it?

(Note to self, put a disjoined 'magic' item in the adventure to be recovered and restored...)

An xp cost would whack the spell casters too much I think but on the other hand MD *is* a 9th level spell.

Suppose you put magical protection on a room for various reasons (either as the DM or as the players). How could the #"!$/%!%?&* Mordenkainen's Disjunction be nullified ? (assuming your are not actively guarding the room)

I think Bastoche this room cannot survive the onslaught of MK.

A solution that springs to mind is a silent alarm spell alerting a guardian.

Unnattended = easy meat, especially to a 17th+ level party. :D
