D&D (2024) How fun are Champion Fighters now?

Didn't play it, but it look as simple and plain and boring as 2014 versions.
It's there to do it's job, be simple, a little more powerful than 2014.

you will have to make your own fun with the class with some thinking as mechanics are not helping you there.

maybe push and topple mastery with Crusher feat can give some battlefield control and more "fun" to the character.

with Lucky feat and 10th level, there is option for Rapier and board with elven accuracy to make some Vex paintrain there.

It fulfills the simple fighter niche much more soundly than it did before, I'll give it that much.

But if your preference is for martials with even a little more complexity, the new Champion won't offer anything that will convince you to look its way.

It's a lot better. If you want simple but effective it's good.

Battlemasters still the best especially for an archer. Champion still takes a bit to long to ramp up but good enough.

EK is also really good BUT.... You need a large degree of system mastery, 2014 material and a higher level game. You xan also screw one up.

Psi knghts next best.

Comparatively amazing overall good. Depending on one's preferences.

Fighter to Fighter tier list. Overall drop them one rank minimum to B tier, BM S tier archer.

S tier. BM, EK*
A EK,Psi K
B Champion
* assuming you know what you're doing and have 2014 material.

Battlemaster is a good inspiration for ideas if you want to play a martial, because many of BMs abilities are doable too for every other character, just without battle dice bonus.

In general with martials I try to play them without looking at "the buttons to press", because they just have less of those with Champion basically being the one having a super simple interface. Controversial Opinion here, but I think it makes for better roleplay in combat. Instead of looking at class feats I try to imagine the situation and think "what yould an badass action hero do" or more specific for champion class "what would Russel Crowe in Gladiator do?".

Of course you need a DM who is able to implement the "Improvise"-Action, which every good one should do.

2014 champion is the most played class at my table.

It's not super powerful, but it's simple and reliable. The 2024 version looks even better.

I have a Champion Fighter that I converted from UA7 to 2024, but I haven't had the chance to play him yet. Basically, when both my daughter's friends come over, we play the main campaign with the three of them as PCs and me as the DM. If only one of her friends comes over, we play one of the two secondary campaigns were I DM as well as play a PC.

In one of those secondary campaigns, they have a Wizard and a Druid, so I chose to play a Fighter to tank for them. I purposely made him a Champion because it seemed to be simpler for me to run while also DMing. He was working pretty well for me while I was using the UA7 build, and the 2024 version doesn't seem too different from what we saw in the UA, so I can't wait to play some more with him and see how it goes (now that we've reached level 3 and the subclass will kick in).

I didn't mind playing them before. Moving on a Crit looks like it would add to the fun but I am not playing one yet. Still working on my Alice Cooper Nightmare Bard.
