Hi ya-

I am having a hell of a time trying to find the relevant rules on lock picking, Why o why does it change with every edition? Anyway, if someone can be kind enough to help me find the rules I need, that would be kool.

If picking the lock would be an action with an uncertain outcome, then the relevant ability check is Dexterity (Thieves' Tools). A standard lock is a DC 15.

* Requires thieves' tools, which cost 25gp (PHB 154).

* Proficiency can come from background (e.g. PHB 141) or being a rogue (PHB 95) or the Skilled feat (PHB 170).

* Thieves can use expertise to get double proficiency (PHB 96), but Bards cannot (PHB 54).

* Normally requires an action but the Thief archetype lets it be a bonus action (PHB 97).

* Arcane Trickster archetype lets us pick locks at range (PHB 98).

* Standard lock is 10gp and DC 15; Manacles have same DC and cost 2gp (PHB 150, 152).

* Pro tip: If you DM only allows one attempt per lock, find someone also proficient with Thieves' tools, and get them to Help you -- advantage!

Yeah, just a Dex check with thieves tools. There aren't special rules for each action, just general rules for ability checks against benchmark DCs.

In addition, if the DM does allow for retries, then DMG page 237. If the PC spends 10x the amount of time as usual trying to pick the lock, he or she simply succeeds, no roll.

Very thorough!

Online versions of D&D books need to be this awesome and then they'd be a great value. Type in 'pick locks' into a search bar and it spits back results from every book you own with that service.
