How Do You Melee a Kobold Dragonshield?

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but if a kobold dragonshield can shift as a free action whenever an enemy moves adjacent, how exactly do you melee one?

There are many threads on this. To sum it up. The Kobold can only do this once per round. So if he does it on, for example, the fighters turn, the kobold can't do it again until the kobold has acted again. That means any other character can move up without an issue. Check out the rules for Immediate Actions for this.

Additionally, it does not prevent the person moving up to him from moving closer again unless he is out of movement. for example, I move 4 spaces, the kobold shifts, well I still have 2 spaces left to move so I move up to him and the kobold can't do anything. The only time I'm screwed is if I moved 6 spaces and he moves and I don't have any movement left. Of course i could then take a 2nd move action, forgoing a standard action to get adjacent to him.

Hope that helps.

Alternatively - don't move 6 squares. Move 3 squares (so you're three squares away), and Ready a charge for when the Dragonshield does anything.

The Charge will trigger on his turn... and since he can only take immediate actions when it isn't his turn, he's unable to shift when you charge him as an immediate reaction.

Yes, this is pretty much your only way to go. You'll need two characters to try and help you get to him, but if you can get your Fighter in melee range your fight will be a lot easier. The Fighter can make an immediate interrupt attack on a marked enemy that tries to shift, which means that if the Kobold tries to shifty away on his turn, he'll take a hit for it. And while Dragonshields are very tough to nail down, once you do, they're not that tough.

Or alternatively have the fighter charge him, seeing as Shifty is a reaction the fighter gets his attack in, and can mark it and if the dragonshield tries to move away from the fighter it gets smacked again.

Well, if the kobold uses Dragonshield Tactics to react to the Fighter charging him, the fighter doesn't get to do his own reaction unless he readied that charge.

That said, don't walk up to dragonshields with your full movement, charge them, once the fighter marks them then everything else is fine.

Be more concerned with how to get -out- of melee with the dragonshield.

No, he doesn't... an immediate reaction can trigger after any given square of movement. So the fighter's charge brings him adjacent, and the shift triggers before the fighter makes his attack as part of the charge.

Are you the DM, or the player, asking this question?

As a player: Don't worry about it. Dragonshields are melee soldiers, so if they aren't meleeing you, they aren't doing their job....and that's a Good Thing.

As a DM: Use the "shifty" power to get into position...it's not very useful to avoid getting hit.
