Holy Avenger and Dispel Magic

Is this actually an advantage? Isn't casting an area Dispel Magic centred on yourself - with only a 5' radius - sort of counterproductive where buffs are concerned?

The holy avenger's dispel ability, like many things paladin-related, is probably taken from Poul Anderson's book _Three Hearts and Three Lions_. At the end of the book, Holger picks up the sword Cortana, and the illusion disguising him is dispelled, along with whatever is blocking his memories of his past.

Which is fine and dandy and makes sense for the book, but personally, I'd just house rule that a D&D holy avenger casts a _targeted_ dispel on anything it hits, once per round.

Eh? Not if you're using it to remove some nasty magical effect(s) from your person ... or from your pals for that matter. How about helping your friend that's been struck by a hold person spell...

Dispel magic is good offensively .. but better defensively.

With an area dispel? You're probably more likely to get his Bull's Strength, his Fly, his True Seeing, his Magic Vestment, or his Haste...

... and one of your own at the same time.

We've had a few threads on this. As long as your target isn't so high in level that the dispel can't affect him at all (level 20), it's still useful, because it'll probably take out SOME spell. In some ways this is a good thing; if my target is level 15 I only have a 1 in 4 chance of taking out each individual spell, but as long as the target has 4 or more spells on that isn't a problem, and the randomness might help a bit against people who layer enchantments with different caster levels.

There are still two problems:
1> Why waste an action casting a dispel you can't control, and that might take off one of your own buffs? Just go hit the guy.
2> Why put an ability which becomes useless at really high levels on a high-level weapon enchantment? (See also: SR 15 on the same weapon)

IMC we reworked the sword to cast Dispel Evil instead of Dispel Magic (except it's a semi-instantaneous version, so no AC boost and it doesn't stick around long; it's more like True Strike), no more SR 15, and it gives a permanent Protection From Evil to its wielder. Upped the cost to compensate.
