Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan in the New Adventure Path?

Wik

First Post
In outline of the new adventure path presented in Dragon #138, adventure 3 states "along the way, [the PCs are] forced to deal with.... a perilous side-trek to the ruined city of Tamoachan...."

Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan is probably my all-time favourite module, with Isle of Dread coming pretty damned close. Tamoachan was absolutely great for me, simply because of the time limit placed upon the PCs.

I'm wondering - does this "side-trek" adventure consist of nothing more than an homage, or is it more of a conversion to 3e of one of the best 1e adventures of all-time? Surely, the hidden shrine isn't a very large module (it's designed for tournament play), and I could see a lot of it being used quite successfully as a side-track in the adventure path.

Hopefully, they'll keep the giant slug and bat "Gods" found in Tamoachan - the idea of a giant slug or bat (I can't remember if there was a slug.... I know there was a bat) being considered a god worthy of sacrifice made what would normally be a monster I'd swap out worthwhile. In fact, when I ran the encounter with the "bat-god", I know it was pretty damned cool, and the group was freaking out over the fight... even though it was really just a stupid, giant animal.

I'd also insist on the time limit found in the original Tamoachan. That was what made the adventure so fun to play - we really hammed that up, and Tamoachan just wouldn't be Tamoachan without it.

Finally, I think it'd be cool for whoever is re-making Tamoachan to include the three PCs included in the original - the half-elven mage/thief, the human cleric, and the barbarian fighter (if memory serves). It'd be especially cool if they were found dead throughout the complex - a sort of memorial to all the PCs who must've died through that adventure.

Oh, and cheers for whoever thought to insert Tamoachan into the adventure path - It's a perfect fit-in with the Isle of Dread, and I'm sort of amazed I never thought of that myself.

I don't recall C1 being particularly small, tournament module or no, but that may have been because of the standards of the time.

But it wasn't ever a city before -- could they be merging the flavor from the Forbidden City and Tamoachan together?

But I agree -- very cool to include this, even if it just ends up being a shout-out.

You are correct, I don't recall it being all that small either. 32 pages or so plus an illustration book and a three panelled cover.

In comparison to other modules at the time it definately weighed in a bit more than the others in that regards. Ghost tower was what, 20 pages?

You know, now that you mention it, tamoachan was fairly large, wasn't it? ah, well, still, it'd be pretty cool to see "3.5ized"

Tamoachan is a ruined city in C1. The hidden shrine that is the focus of that module is merely a part of that city.

Some quotes from page 1:

"The Hidden Shrine is part of the ancient ruined city of Tamoachan, once the northernmost capitol of the Olman empire...".

"Most of the city is toppled and almost completely covered in undergrowth".

I would suspect that the side-trek to the city is more likely to expand the coverage of the ruined city (which was very minimal in C1), rather than a revision of the hidden shrine dungeon which had 54 keyed locations in the original.

It would however be nice to see an Expedition or Return to the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan as well.

The ruined city of Tamoachan will indeed play a part in the third adventure of Savage Tide. It's not going to be a complete update of the original adventure though, merely some new encounters in the ruined city that'll be fairly important to the overall plot of Savage Tide (even if it might not be that obvious to the PCs at the time...).
