D&D 5E Help with a padlock build?

SkylarkR6

First Post
So I'm currently AFB after a nasty fall on the ice and I have been inspired by the random little girl sitting in the clinic next to me who was talking about how unicorns are awesome and she wants to be a unicorn princess and heal all the hurt people. So with that notion....

Ancients paladin and Celestial tomelock? Texted my DAM and he's willing to waive the street req to multiclass as long as dex is there. Has anyone tried this? I'm envisioning smiting, pally aura, lots of free healing(on uncounterable bonus action at range for some of it!!!) And of course... All of the rituals.

Trying to find the right balance between the two while away from books. Kinda wish I had my laptop...

As with any multi class scenario, figuring out how many classes in each to take and when to take them is the problem. Any Ancients Pally wants at least 7 levels to get that awesome aura, but when to take them? You have to ask these questions.
1. What level will you start at? Starting higher than level 1 makes multiclassing much easier.
2. What level do you think you will get to before it's over? Most campaigns never make it to higher levels.
3. How often do you play and how quickly do you level up? For some campaigns, going from level 1 to level 7 can take months.
4. Are you going to NEED ASIs and/or feats? If so, you're likely going to want to stick to chunks of 4 levels at a time or maybe to level 5 Pally for extra attack. Rolling stats can help this a lot.

So basically, I would maybe start Pally all the way to 7 and then take Warlock from there til the end, but of course for a long time, you will just simply be a Pally.
Or, you could start Pally 1, then take 4 Warlock levels, then switch back to Pally for the next 6. This would get the feel for your character sooner.

I like the synergy here for these two classes and I'm drooling over the idea of a Gestalt build between the two one day.

Starting at 3, was thinking pally 1/lock 2, go to lock 4 for pact and asi then pally to 7 I guess. You asked all the questions I wanted to heh. We level fairly quick. We do lots of combat and play weekly for 4-5 hours and usually pace quick.
Chain actually might be fun as someone over at giantitp said. Invo for boosted self healing could be sick

Don't dump strength. Medium armor is not as bad as people want to tell you. Especially if you vecome tomelock and take the shilelagh cantrip.
You don't want to increase dex further and you don't want to heavily invest in str.

So with standard array your best bet is:

12+1 Str
13+1 Dex
15 Con
8 Int
10 Wis
14+2 Charisma

(Half elf)

With dropped ste requirement you can also do 12 str and 16 con.
You may want resilient fortitude at some point however.

Ok. With those stats it really does not matter what you do. ;)

In that case:
13 Str
16 Dex
16 Con
11 Int
12 wis
18 Cha

Pick any race you like. ;)
I would most probably be a wood elf.

And in that case, abide to the multiclass rules. With those stats you should not ignore rules even if you are allowed to.

If I were in your place, I would even go for heavy armor with str 16. That would be the best I could think of. You don't really win anything by going dex in that case. Just unneeded restrictions in your choice of equippment.

Yeah. I don't usually roll that good. And you're right about heavy armor. Plus you can't discount the image of the Knight in shining armor. Filling out my sheet now that I'm home heh

So my final setup is...
Name TBD
Half Elf Knight of the Order background(unicorn)
Str 18
Dex 14
Con 16
Int 12
Wish 12
Cha 18

Proficiencies in athletics, nature, insight, medicine, perception, survival and persuasion.

Cantrips of Eldritch Blast, GFB(make up for slower extra attack), with bonus sacred flame and light.
Spells are Armor of Agathys and Cure wounds
Invocations are Agonizing Blast and Beast speech.
Paladin1/warlock2 to start of course. I think I'm going Paladin2 first to get my extra spells and my smites on. Then go to Lock 4

Agreed. Go 16 Str, 16 Con, and 18 Cha. While medium armor is fine, heavy is still better if you have the stats for it.

Starting paladin 1/warlock 2 is good. Sword and Board and GFB or Booming Blade.
paladin 2 for spells.
warlock 3 for slots, shillelagh, guidance, and rituals.
Paladin 9 for inspiring leader, +2 Cha, protection aura's, and aura of vitality.
warlock 5 for slots to power aura of vitality. And possibly healer feat.

And I suggest going female halfling. Just to stick with being a little girl enamored with unicorns. Lucky helps damage and saves. Dex is a bit of a waste, but given your rolls, you can afford it.

Oh no I am unable to play a female heh. The little one in the waiting room was very sweet but I can't template her heh. I'm going for full on Romantic Knight of the Order of the Unicorn(with unicorn being the patron as well of course).

Hardest part is the pact to take now. Tome would be fun with Shillelagh and rituals are always useful. Chain gives me a pseudodragon to play with and send spells through after I'm out of healing light. Blade gives me the magic weapon for anime factor. And more smites but those come on late at that point
