Help out with a Poi based character

For those of you who are unaware of what Poi is, this is a very good example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az_PxZqHCZ4

I am wanting to make a character based on this style of dance. I am thinking of using some spellcasting, possibly playing a bard type character, but I wouldn't know what weapon choice.

It is a forgotten Realms game based in Westgate with character levels of 5. Any advice, tips, or references would be great. Thank you.

Spiked Chain obviously!!!:)

Or Bolas

Heavy Poi-toa (which means Warrior-Poi) consisting of a weighted ball on a long cord were originally used by Maori (of New Zealand) as training aids to keep wrist supple for handling clubs and stone-blades. They could be used as weapons (but it wasn't easy to do so) and obviously can be used to trip. You could develop that into a weapon concept

The flaming poi are a modern innovation (so magic works)...

I think using the bola would be perfect. I would think a monk varient would be a great way to go with the idea. If you use a bard, it definitely works for the fascinate ability.

That is kind of cool, are the bola's in the phb or would the DM need to adjudicate something?

I could see them being treated as Halfling Bola's or something and dealing damage as a small flail.

Spiked chain all the way.

Bolas are kind of boleadoras used by charruas (that's the originary inhabitants from this region of Earth called Uruguay, extinguished by the might of the European empires... actually by their colonies here... but I digress) and they were used to tangle the enemy (or, more commonly, ñandu, a small species of ostrich). Thrown weapons.

I love the idea of creating a class around Poi... letsee...

About the class... hum...

So you want some magic...

Bard-like...

Strong in magic?
Bardic Knowledge and stuff?
Able combatant?
Bardic Music and stuff?

Unless I'm missing something...

this looks like it could be done with any class/race combo and dual-wielding Flails... flaming flails.

They look like non-metal flails, essentually. If you were to dual-weild two light flails and combine some fighter levels with the bard (basically trained warrior with some fascination/entertaining bits - kinda like the movie) and go for the Tempest PrC (CompAdven) which lessens TWF penalties which would be great for this build.

Go with Human (for the feat - Tempest requirements are kinda high feat-wise) Fighter 2 / Bard 3 to start, adding on another couple of fighter levels for the BAB. Here's the rundown:

1 Fighter: +1 BAB, 3 feats [human, normal, fighter]. Take Two Weapon Fighting [15 Dex], Dodge [13 Dex] and Weapon Focus (Light Flail) [+1 BAB].
2 Fighter: +1 BAB, 1 feat [fighter] Take Mobility [13 Dex, Dodge].
3 Bard: +0 BAB, 1 feat [normal].
4 Bard: +1 BAB
5 Bard: +1 BAB
6 Fighter: +1 BAB, 1 feat [normal] take Spring Attack [Dex 13, Dodge, Mobility, base attack bonus +4.]
7 Fighter: +1 BAB, 1 feat [fighter]. Take Improved Two Weaopn Fighting.
8 Tempest: good to go from here! Remember to run back and take a couple more fighter levels; this will net you Weapon Spec ;)

Hope that helped :) Rememer, you'll need high dex for this build, and flaming light flails :]
