The more I think about it, the more I really like this thread. Thanks for the input, everyone! Let me know if you see anything that needs to be revised, whether to be more like the books or more balanced for gaming.

I'm sure that these items aren't the only ones...anyone got any others?

Alchemical Preparations

[SBLOCK=Gillyweed] This rare, bitter-tasting herb bestows the Aquatic subtype on any creature that eats it. The creature can breathe underwater, and can Swim at his base speed without requiring Swim checks. The effects last for one hour.

Craft (alchemy); Weight: -, cost: 75 gp)[/SBLOCK]

Wondrous Items

[SBLOCK=Firebolt]This broom is able to fly through the air as if affected by an overland flight spell (average maneuverability) for up to 9 hours per day (split up as its owner desires). The broom can carry 200 pounds and fly at a speed of 180 feet, or up to 400 pounds at a speed of 90 feet. In addition, the broom can travel alone to any destination named by the owner as long as she has a good idea of the location and layout of that destination. It comes to its owner from as far away as 300 yards when she speaks the command word. The broom of flying has a speed of 90 feet when it has no rider.

Moderate transmutation; CL 9th; Craft Wondrous Item, overland flight, permanency, haste; Price 41,300 gp; Weight 3 lb.[/SBLOCK]

[SBLOCK=Moody's Mad Eye]This odd eyepiece appears to be a clockwork eye in a mithral frame. Its wearer is able to see in all directions at the same moment due to the constant rotation and scrolling of the eyepiece. He also gains 120-foot darkvision.

Moody's Mad Eye sees all forms of invisible or ethereal things within 120 feet.

The wearer of the eyepiece gains a +10 competence bonus on Search checks and Spot checks. He retains his Dexterity bonus to AC even when flat-footed, and he cannot be flanked.

A light or continual flame spell cast directly on Moody's Mad Eye causes it to be blinded for 1d3 minutes. A daylight spell blinds it for 2d4 minutes.

Moderate divination; CL 11th; Craft Wondrous Item, true seeing; Price 120,000 gp;Weight 1 lb.[/SBLOCK]

I would change the Invisibility Cloak to two medium or three small creatures, and note that said creatures take the penalties for squeezing through a tight space while doin so. It's also too cheap.

The Gillyweed item needs to note swim speed granted (if the aquatic subtype does not specify... I don't really know).

The broom speeds seen in the movie seem a lot faster than what you have listed.

Other items for development: Time Turner (Prisoner of Azcaban), the various candies (voices of animals), Howler notes.

50' with a Move action means you can Run in a straight line for 200'/round which is approximately 23 MPH.

Just how fast should a broomstick be?

The movies make it appear like about 50mph (even more in nosedives), all with some maneuverability. I wouldn't know what to actually stat it as for purposes of D&D.

Good call on the space requirement; didn't think about that.

As for the pricing...I went with a permanent 4th level spell (2,000 gp x caster level 7 x spell level 4) plus permanency (+5,000 gp and 1,000 xp). I agree that it should probably be more expensive, but I don't know how to justify the added cost. Well, without assigning a "DM's Perogative" multiplier, anyway. What am I missing?

Greater Invisibility is just one of those effects that doesn't play well with the item creation guidelines.

Note that in the DMG the Ring of Invisibility goes for 20,000gp when the guidelines in back would price it at 10,800gp.

OTOH, you missed the Duration modifier for a continuous item based on a round/level duration of x4, so it should cost

SL(4)*CL(7)*Duration(4)*Continuous(2000)== 224,000gp

Which actually seems about right.

A mitigating factor with the cloak might be some kind of mobility hindrance. The thing really seems to get in the way, but that might just be because it doesn't fit Harry yet. :)

When Harry is the only person under the cloak it doesn't appear to hinder his movement at all. He does generally try to Move Silently at the same time, but I don't see any movement penalty.

The Invisibility Cloak in Harry Potter doesn't seem to be nearly as useful as Improved Invis in D&D, though. It seems more like a Sheet of Invisibility - you have to be completely covered by the cloth for it to do you any good. I can't picture anybody fighting while using it, for example, and that's the big thing about Improved Invis. It seems more like how I'd imagine a Greater Cloak of Elvenkind - giving a big boost to Hide checks, but requiring you to move at half-speed and not make too much in the way of obvious motions.
