Half-Troll Racial Class

I have a player who expressed interest in playing a half-troll character in my next campaign. Since he came up with a cool enough backstory to convince me, I started looking at implementation. I prefer to use Savage Species style racial classes for all ECL>1 races, so everyone can start at 1st level without any EXP wonkiness.

The idea here is a half-human, half-troll character who started out life as a normal human, and was involuntarily subjected to the half-troll template, the full effects of which will be expressed over time (and levels). So this is still a template-style character, but with the template stretched over 5 levels (1 HD creature + 4 LA template).

HALF-TROLL (HUMAN)
I'm not a troll! I am a HUMAN BEING! Just kidding, I really am a troll...

This half-human/half-troll character is the result of a permanent transformation inflicted on an otherwise normal human. The character begins play standing at 6 feet tall, and grows to nearly 8 feet tall by 5th level. The character's build is mostly thin and wiry, except in the shoulders, neck, and arms, which are heavy with large muscles. The character's skin is mottled green in color, with a thick, leathery texture, but suffers no other ill-seeming effects. The head is square with a flat face dominated by heavy brow ridges and an inhumanly broad, flat nose. The wide mouth is filled with sharp teeth and framed by black lips and tongue. Hands and feet all end in four long digits with black razor-sharp claws. These natural weapons prevent the character from using fine or diminutive-sized tools effectively. The character has a ravenous appetite, and by 5th level, must consume five times as much food daily as a normal human in order to maintain normal health.

RACIAL TRAITS

• Base type is Giant.

• +2 Strength, -2 Intelligence, –2 Charisma: Half-trolls are strong but dull and beastial in appearance.

• Medium: As Medium creatures, half-trolls (human) have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

• 1 extra feat at 1st level, because the character was born human and retains its human personality.

• Half-troll (human) base land speed is 30 feet.

• -8 racial penalty with Open Lock, Sleight of Hand, and Use Rope skills: Half-trolls have weapons for hands.

• Low-light Vision: An half-troll can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination.

• Darkvision: Half-trolls can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Half-trolls can function just fine with no light at all.

• 4 extra skill points at 1st level and 1 extra skill point at each additional HD/level, since the character was born human and retains its human personality.

• Automatic Language: Common. Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic).

• Favored Class: Half-Troll.

HALF-MONSTER CLASS

Class Skills: Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Swim (Str).

CLASS FEATURES

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Half-trolls are proficient with any simple or martial weapons, but not with armor or shields.

Natural Armor: Half-trolls gains a natural armor bonus to armor class.

Claws: A half-troll has two claw attacks that are natural weapons dealing 1d4 damage plus Strength bonus.

Bite: A half-troll has a bite attack that is a natural weapon dealing 1d6 damage plus 1/2 Strength bonus.

Rend (Ex): If a troll hits with both claw attacks, it latches onto the opponent’s body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an additional 2d4+(Str bonus) points of damage.

Scent (Ex): This special quality allows the half-troll to detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell.

Fast Healing (Ex): A half-troll heals points of damage each round so long as it has at least 1 hit point. Fast healing does not restore hit points lost from starvation, thirst, or suffocation, and it does not allow a half-troll to regrow or reattach lost body parts.

First of all, this sould be in House Rules. Maybe a kind Mod will move it.

A few comments below

Sounds good. Mayube Powerful Build?

• 4 extra skill points at 1st level and 1 extra skill point at each additional HD/level, since the character was born human and retains its human personality.

I would drop these. It isn't a human, and getting the human bonuses weakens humans in general.

• Half-troll (human) base land speed is 30 feet.

Why these and not other obvious choices like disable device?

Cannot reproduce the nice box...

So you are giving out three d8 HD, so it is only a +2LA, and retains most/all of the troll's power? I really think it should be 1d8 hd, or maybe at most 2d8HD and +3 or so Level adjustment. Basically you have given all the abilities of a troll, so the LA should not change much if at all.

My few thoughts.
 

I considered House Rules, but I wanted to vet this design from a rules perspective. The human racial traits (bonus feat and skill ranks) are definitely house-rulesy from a scope perspective. Ignoring that, the rest of the design was intended to conform to the rules; its not like I made this all up from thin air.

I guess the question is, if someone were to design a new monster, and wanted to check the design with the rules guru community, would they be better served by posting it here or in House Rules? If this really belongs in House Rules, then by all means move it; I apologize if I posted this here in error.

"Powerful Build"--ala Goliaths? That's an interesting idea. Is there a feat that offers this effect, or would this be a good custom feat?

The human racial traits are definitely a little outside the box, but the player wanted a character whose personality was still essentially human, who was not born with troll racial features. The idea from a rules perspective is that the base creature is human, with the half-troll template added to that.

I considered Disable Device for the skill penalty, and its still on the table. An argument could be made that there are some devices (based on size) that could still be manipulated by such a creature. The skills I included were ones I considered to be clearly impacted by razor-sharp clawed fingers. This penalty also falls into the "house rules" domain, since I made this one up. It was mostly intended as flavor.

The rest of it is a combination of the Fiend Folio half-troll template, the Savage Species troll class, the 3.5 MM troll, and the general rules for the Giant type. The FF template is, in summary:

Natural Armor +4
Bite & Claw Damage
SA: Rend
SQ: Darkvision 60', Fast Healing 5, & Scent
Abilities: Str +6, Dex +2, Con +6, Int –2, Cha –2

This template is listed as CR +2 and LA +4. From my reading of Savage Species, this is a 1 HD base creature with a +4 LA template, resulting in a ECL 5 character. Compare this to the ECL 11 troll racial class in Savage Species.

Note that while the template does include the normal troll features (except low-light; that appers to be a change between 3.0 and 3.5 trolls), most of them are watered down to some degree (fast heal vs. regeneration, darkvision 60' vs. 90', etc.). The HD, BAB, saves, and skill ranks were all derived from the Giant type. This is where I had to thrash around with the rules quite a bit, and was hoping for a validation check from the rules gurus.

In fact, I just found one myself - the rend damage for a medium character is 2d4; I think that was a cut & paste faux pas. :p
