Half-Elf Fighter Combo that is made of win.

So it is pretty much consensus that the half-elf is the worst base race in 4.0. However there are exceptions where it can be good.

I read a challenge in a thread on rpg.net that asked for someone to build a swashbuckler who is not trained in thievery skill.

Here goes:

Half-Elf Fighter 1

STR 16, DEX 16, CON 16, INT 8, WIS 14, CHA 12

Dillitante: Riposte Strike

Feat: Weapon Prof. Rapier

Now-- the combo: Attack & Mark foe w/ Riposte Strike. He now has a few choices:
Attack you-- and you can attack him at +7 to hit 1d8+3 dmg as an immediate interrupt
Attack someone else at -2 to hit-- and you can attack him as above
Shift away-- and you can attack him as above
Move away-- and you can attack him w/+9 to hit 1d8+3 damage and stop his movement as immediate interrupt
Sit on his hands and do nothing-- you don't get a free attack on him-- but he wastes his turn!

Now this combo gets better at level 2 when you take the rogue multiclass feat to sneak attack 1/encounter as well.

At level 11 you can either multiclass into Rogue full-time-- and get Riposte Strike as an at will (which would be awesome to do every round!) and retrain your Dilitante power or go into the swordmaster paragon path.

Except, that's just once per encounter, and you could instead have a race that emphasizes a key ability.

Like, I don't think this compares very well to Dragonborn or Dwarf fighters. Their once per encounter abilities are at least as good.

I do like the half-elf option with Righteous Brand, but even then I'm iffy on half-elf fighters. Paladins or Warlords, sure.

Anyhow, seems fine as a swashbuckler, though I'd consider going ranger instead... just still showcases the half-elf not being particularly impressive at the same time :)

And then only for a single round. Nonetheless it's nice during this single round

While that's a nice option it's not really an awesome option because instead of using the at-will you have the choice to use an encounter or daily power (although it sounds awesom to first smack the enemy with a powerfull daily and then use your action point to bind him to you whith adding riposte strike)

I disagree entirely. Where was the thread where everyone said half-elves suck?

How exactly is a half-elf any worse of a race than any other? Their stat bonuses make for great warlocks, good Warlords, good Paladins. Their Dilettante ability gives them decent flexibility especially when combined with multiclassing. Their Dual Heritage trait makes them eligible for the bomb-ass human feats and elf feats.

Of course it depends how your group plays... when I actually get a chance to play in a game I'm seriously considering a half-elf warlock.

Edit: And then there's the build you just demonstrated. I think half-elves are good because they have decent flexibility without nerfing themselves.
