Grell...what book is it in?

What book is the Grell in? Isn't that the big brainy monster with a beak and tentacles, I can't seem to find it.

Don't know if it was updated elsewhere, but there is an entire chapter dedicated to the Grell in Lords of Madness, the book of aberrations.

Grells are cool - definitely one of my favorite creatures. Anything that looks like a big floating brain with tentacles and grapples people is a winner in my book!

There's a grell in the first dungeon of the Dungeon Adventure Path. It was definitely one of the better encounters for my group. Well it was for me at least considering it picked up the cleric and dropped him from about 30' up. :]

3e Grell:
  • Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil
  • Monster Manual II
3.5 Grell:
  • Lords of Madness
  • D&D Miniatures Deathknell Expansion (see back of stats card).

I think that's as exhaustive as you can get without listing pre-3e stuff.

My name is Philip Reed and I endorse this statement. Or, in other words, hell yeah grell are cool. What a great monster. We need more weird monsters that are fun in play.

You say your players aren't familiar with the grapple rules? Throw a few grell at them and they'll get familiar pretty quick. :)

Maybe that's what we need, more monsters that teach them game. "Gather 'round adventurers as we teach you the starvation rules. This is the hecallarve and its tentacles stick in your stomach and feed on the contents of your digestive system. Have fun!"

Grells are badass monsters. Ever since I bought the bendy wire-framed Grell figure back in the day (and then learned true DnD Grells didn't have eyes, but oh well) I've had a fondness for them (and Neo-Otyughs, but that's neither here nor there). I always thought the Grick from the Monster Manual was meant to be some sort of Grell relative... in some way it has a similar appearance.
