Greater Maw of Acamar

That sounds like a really cool idea! I commented in your blog, but I'll also reiterate what I said here.

The tidal forces aura needs to have an activation time. Does the damage happen at the beginning of the creature's turn, or on the maw's turn?

Also, does corpse star's grip affect every creature in the burst, only one, only enemies, or something else?

Other than those little things, I think this idea is really awesome! The one in the Monster Manual 2 is okay, but it would be cool to fight a solo version of this! Save the universe from a black hole by fighting it! Thanks for the ideas!

Hmmm.. I don't see any comments on that post (other than the one I just did to make sure it's working).

That said, I did edit the statblock to account for when the damage is taken (at the beginning of the creature's turn). I thought Close Burst implied all creatures, but it probably would be good to explicitly say so.

Not sure a Solo would be much fun though...unless you had other creatures still with it. It would...uh...suck.

2 of these would be really nasty, and would actually do what the Maw of Acamar fluff describes...two Maws eating a victim caught between them. (the fluff doesn't match the mechanics of the original since ongoing damage doesn't stack).

Hm, sorry. Could've sworn I posted that. Blogspot has some problems with comments sometimes.

I have a more optimistic view towards solos than other DMs seem to. Many suggest only using solos of the PCs level or lower, and always combining them with other monsters. I think that out there somewhere there is a successful way to challenge the party with a higher level solo who's actually solo without completely overwhelming them. I just haven't found it yet...

I've been able to challenge PCs with a single Solo, but the combat has been fairly boring. It's usually very static where everyone just stands around and pounds each other. Part of that is a result of the fact that a Fighter can lock down a Solo and completely prevent him from moving, and any Controllers, without house rules, can daze or stun the Solo right out of the game.
