Greataxe Damage

I am a little confused, maybe someone with a better understanding of the rules can help. What is the damage roll of a basic attack made with a Greataxe by a 1st lvl fighter with 18 str?

I think it's 1d12.

are there any bonuses to damage?

I played at game day this weekend. I played as the dwarf fighter who had a greataxe and did 1d12+6 on his basic attack. This confuses me as he only had a 16 str. What am I missing? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd assume he had the Dwarven Weapon Training feat, which gives +2 to damage with axes and hammers, but where the final +1 comes from I'm not sure, as I haven't seen the game day character sheets. Does he have a +1 axe?

In answer to your first question, the base damage for a greataxe is 1d12. Unless an attack says otherwise, you add your Strength bonus and any other miscellaneous bonuses to that damage roll.

Unless otherwise stated, a Basic attack is Weapon + stat mod per PHB pg 287

I would hazzard a guess that someone writing up the Dwarf sheet either forgot you don't get 1.5 str mod anymore or got confused with the versatile weapon quality which great axes don't have, but battle axes do.

Maybe he had power attack and was using it all the time?

Otherwise, dwarven weapon training with a +1 axe makes the most sense.

Or it could've been an error with the character pregen.

I would see this as extremely likely.

It is more likely they wrote it up as 1d12+3 (Str)+2 (dwarven axe feat)+1 extra damage using a 2 handed weapon.

Just a guess. Someone tookt he using a versatile weapon 2 handed gives you +1 damage as if it applied to all 2 handed weapons.

Durgen Darksteel, the dwarven fighter for the gameday, lists his basic Greataxe attack as +6 vs AC and 1d12 + 5 for damage, with High Crit. I am looking at the character sheet now.
