grappling when prone

Hi,

Any rules for starting a grapple on a prone person?

We played it this way, happy to hear what other people think.

-4 to touch attack to start grapple
Opposed grapple checks (cant remember if prone person took -4 on the check)
Break grapple (again may not have taken -4 into account)
Free of grapple and relocated to adjacent sqaure prone.

Cheers

You do take a -4 for the touch, or any attack rolls, but I don't believe you would take a penalty for grapple checks, which are similar to but not the same as attack rolls.

The Main 3.5e FAQ still says that the prone combatant would take a -4 on the opposed grapple check -- a left-over from Skip Williams, the previous author of the FAQ. Andy Collins, the current FAQ author, makes it pretty clear that he disagrees with the PH rule, "A grapple check is like a melee attack roll." So he'd probably say that you do not take that -4.

Making a grapple attack on a prone person would give the attacker a +4 bonus on the melee touch attack roll in step 2.

Well, ye can agree that a grapple check be like a melee attack roll, without it being identical.

I can say that a kobold be like a goblin, but the kobold won't be affected by a Goblinbane sword (well, affected more than the usual, anyway).

Ye scabrous dog!
